Cal’s Monroe, Wohar in section doubles final
California’s top doubles pairing of John Monroe and Josh Wohar lost only four games Monday, winning their way to today’s Section 1-AA doubles championship against Mount Pleasant’s Jacob Chovanec and Robbie Bailey.
Monroe and Wohar opened with a 10-2 victory against Mount Pleasant’s Josh Simms and Josh Stadling. They then defeated the Brownsville pair of Jake Robbins and Phil Thomas, 10-0, and advanced to the finals with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Thomas Jefferson’s Connor O’Leary and Jake Radovic.
Chovanec and Bailey cruised past Greensburg Salem’s DJ Zedalis and Nick Nicassio, 10-1, in their first match. They won by the same score against South Park’s Anthony Girol and Noah Weiss.
The Viking duo then defeated the third-seeded team of Jake Stock and Bryan Ochs, of Thomas Jefferson, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
Robbins and Thomas opened with a 10-3 win against Southmoreland’s Luke Jacquillard and Anthony DePalma.
Ringgold’s Matt Burch and Jared Yahnite and Miguel Tunon and Matt Cannon lost their opening-round matches.
Brownsville’s Shandon Marshall and Christian Carpenter lost their first match, 10-5.
California’s Austin Sutch and Jordan Rossell opened with a 10-6 win, but lost to Stock and Ochs in the quarterfinals.
Stock and Ochs will play teammates O’Leary and Radovic in the consolation finals.
