Rohanna has rough opening round in Guatemala
Robert Rohanna was a bit under the weather in Thursday’s opening round of the Guatemala Stello Artois Open, and his score reflected his health.
The Waynesburg Central graduate shot 5-over 77 at La Reunion Golf Resort and is situated way back on the leaderboard, tied for 115th place.
Argentinian Rafael Echenique leads after the first round after shooting 7-under 65.
“The round didn’t go so hot. I’m a little under the weather, my throat is killing me,” Rohanna explained via Facebook Messenger. “I’ve drank about 10 waters and four Gatorades today and still am exhausted, and can barely swallow, unfortunately.”
The combination of his poor health and the course produced three bogeys on both the front and back nine to go with his lone birdie scored on No. 6.
“The golf course is on the side of a volcano. I struggled walking up and down the hills and had some dehydration issues I think. I just couldn’t drink enough,” said Rohanna. “This course is just tough when I’m not hitting at well as I’d hope. I hit some good shots that just didn’t turn out well, took the wrong slopes on this mountain and who knows where it ends up.”
Rohanna added, “The stomach issues, can’t swallow and not hitting that well, if I could have scrambled a little better I could have salvaged something today, but I didn’t. I’m not playing that poorly, honestly, but today I didn’t play that good. I had poor putting today. I had two 3-putts. I had plenty of chances on the front nine. I hit good putts but they didn’t go in.”
Rohanna knows he’s going to have get some birdies for any chance at the weekend. He is just hoping he comes around physically.
“I’ve been laying around since like 1:30 trying to feel a little better. I took a little nap already, too,” said Rohanna. “I’m just not feeling well and not playing well, a double whammy.”
