Rohanna has another tough day on the course

By Jim Downey jdowney@heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

Rachel Rohanna hit only three fairways in Saturday’s third round of the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic presented by CTBC, and as a consequence finished with an 8-over 80.

The Waynesburg Central graduate enters today’s final round on Lake Merced Golf Club near San Francisco at 10-over 226.

Rohanna hit only 7-of-18 greens in regulation and needed 32 putts. She had 34 putts in the second round.

“This is a really tough course. If you miss the fairway, then there’s only a 20 percent chance you’re going to par, and I only hit two (three) fairways,” explained Rohanna. “I’m hitting my driver better. But, miss the fairway and I had to punch out onto the fairway. Then, I’d have an 8 or 9-iron for birdie and a 20- or 30-footer for par. You’re not going to make a lot of those.

“Plus, I’ve had six 3-putts. These greens are tough.”

Rohanna isn’t just going to play out the final 18 holes, though.

“I need to straighten out my driver. I’m playing well. I feel I’m close to getting four under-par rounds,” said Rohanna, taking a break from an impromptu ping pong tournament in the locker room. “I’ll have fun with everything. That’s when I play well.”

The LPGA Tour moves to Texas this weekend with the next stop in Alabama, an event Rohanna played last year.

“I’ll take some positives from the week into next week. I haven’t played in Texas, but I have in Alabama,” said Rohanna.

“I’m giving myself a chance to contend. There’s no reason to change that now.”
