WPIAL team track brackets announced
Five local track & field programs continue their quest for a WPIAL team title when the playoffs begin on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at various sites.
The first-place team at each of the four Class AAA and AA semifinal sites advances to the WPIAL Championships on Monday, May 9, at Baldwin High School.
The Belle Vernon boys, Section 2-AAA champions, travel to Norwin along with Kiski Area and Baldwin. The Leopards lineup includes sprinter Jake Powell, Brennan Morgan in the middle distance and thrower Austin Bell.
The Southmoreland boys and girls head north to Freeport. The Scotties are anchored in the distance runs by Ben Bickerton. Austin Keyser (jumps) and Nick Hyde (throws) have also been solid performers. The Farino sisters, Kaylee and Vayda, are solid on the track for the Lady Scots, with Sarah Opst (jumps) and Julea Claycomb (throws) providing points through the lineup.
The Scotties are with Riverside at Freeport.
The Waynesburg Central boys and girls travel up Interstate 70 for a semifinal date at Greensburg Central Catholic. The Raiders’ lineup includes Ben Bumgarner (distance), Cade Rush (distance), Cameron McIe (middle distance), Mitch Warman (throws), and Blake Brewer (sprints), while Lindsee Zimmer (distance) and Emma Tustin (hurdles) are consistent point scorers for the Lady Raiders.
The California and Brownsville girls tied for second in Section 6-AA with Waynesburg Central. The Lady Trojans join Southmoreland and Mohawk at Freeport, while the Lady Falcons travel to Shenango with Burrell and South Park.
Ashley McIntosh (jumps, hurdles), Destiny Gudel (distance), Marissa Bitonti (throws), and Deja Walker (sprints) have been consistent scorers for California this season.
The Brownsville girls feature a tandem of sisters, the Vances, Adrienne, Sara and Jessica, in the distances and the Setos, Maris and Alie, in the jumping events.
