FCCA golf tourney kicks off fall season
The fall sports season officially began Monday and golf teams around the area officially begin competition Friday in various tournaments and non-section matches.
The annual Fayette County Coaches Association golf tournament tees off at 9 a.m. Friday at Duck Hollow Golf Club with all seven county programs, plus Southmoreland and Belle Vernon, vying for all-county individual and team honors.
Beth-Center, California, Carmichaels, Charleroi, Elizabeth-Forward, Thomas Jefferson, Ringgold, Bentworth, Burgettstown, and Waynesburg Central play in the TriCADA Tournament at Cedarbrook Golf Course with an 8 a.m. start.
The Mount Pleasant girls host Norwin at Norvelt Golf Club in a non-section match beginning at 3 p.m., while the Viking boys travel to Valley Green Golf Course for a non-section match against Hempfield.
Laurel Highlands’ Johnathan Ek returns to defend his individual crown won by defeating Albert Gallatin’s Tanner Kutek in a playoff.
Uniontown Danae Rugola and Logan Levander, Albert Gallatin’s Cole Bogozi, and Geibel Catholic’s Anthony Lovat are returning all-county performers from last year.
Albert Gallatin won the big school team title with a score of 430, while Southmoreland was the top small school program with a team total of 447.
Belle Vernon split its squad last year, but senior Michael Lubrani is expected to take the course for a chance at the individual title he won as a sophomore.
The golfers have the weekend off and then jump right into section matches on Monday.
