Carei wins pole vault

Belmont University sophomore and Uniontown graduate Braden Carei had a strong start to the indoor season Saturday by finishing first in the pole vault at the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener.

Carei was successful on his first attempt of his opening height of 4.30 meters. He needed two attempts at 4.45 meters, but hit his winning height of 4.60 meters in his first attempt. He failed all three attempts at 4.75 meters.

Carei’s winning height of 4.60 meters (15-1) is an indoor record for Belmont.

The Bruins had a successful day as a team with five top-10 performances in 11 events.

Cal U’s Dunn honored

California University of Pa. head football coach Gary Dunn was honored as the American Football Coaches Association Region 1 Coach of the Year.

Dunn was one of five coaches in NCAA Division II named regional Coach of the Year on Tuesday, while the AFCA Division II National Coach of the Year will be announced on January 10. He also was one of 12 head coaches across the country — FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA — to earn their first AFCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2016.
