Antill’s layup lifts Mapletown to 38-36 win

Abby Antill’s driving layup with eight seconds remaining lifted Mapletown to a 38-36 win Saturday over Bentworth in the consolation game of the Avella Tip-Off Tournament.

Mapletown (1-1) led 22-11 at halftime, but Bentworth rallied in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 30-28.

Antill led the Lady Maples with 13 points. Kelsi Smith added 10.

Grace Marchezak led the Lady Bearcats (0-2) with 18 points.

Gateway 81, Laurel Highlands 17 — The Gateway girls scored all the points they needed in the first eight minutes Saturday afternoon as the Lady Gators defeated Laurel Highlands, 81-17, in the second day of the FCCA Tip-Off Tournament.

Gateway (2-0) led 23-5 after the first quarter. The Lady Gators extended their lead to 41-12 at halftime and led 69-14 after three quarters.

Gateway’s Jordan Edwards and Cierra Christian shared game-scoring honors with 15 points apiece.

Kylie Miller scored four points for Laurel Highlands (0-2).

Mount Pleasant 49, Uniontown 11 — The Mount Pleasant defense held the Uniontown girls to just two points in the first half, no points in the first quarter, as the Lady Vikings coasted to a 49-11 win Saturday afternoon in the FCCA Tip-Off Tournament.

The Lady Raiders (0-2) trailed 28-2 at halftime, but managed to cut a couple points off their deficit with a 6-4 third quarter. Mount Pleasant (2-0) finished with a 17-3 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Kerri Bungard led the Lady Vikings with 15 points. Gabbi Keefer added 11.

Kelsea Rose score four points for Uniontown.

Connellsville 59, Woodland Hills 27 — Molly Bauer scored a game-high 21 points Saturday as the Connellsville girls posted their first win of the season with a 59-27 victory over Woodland Hills in the FCCA Tip-Off Tournament.

Connellsville (1-1) led 14-2, 35-16 and 50-21 at the quarter breaks.

Dae-Lin Burnsworth was also in double digits for the Lady Falcons with 13 points.

Southmoreland 68, Frazier 56 — Olivia Porter and Carissa Cyphert combined for 48 points as the host Lady Scots defeated Frazier, 68-56, Saturday in the title game of the Southmoreland Tip-Off Tournament.

Porter scored a game-high 28 points, while Cypher finished with 20.

Southmoreland (2-0) led 15-9 after the first quarter and 35-25 at halftime. The Lady Scots held a slight 33-31 advantage in the second half.

Brooke Poling led the Lady Commodores (1-1) with 20 points. Jovanna Isaac added 11.

Albert Gallatin 41, Yough 17 — The Albert Gallatin girls held Yough scoreless in the second quarter Saturday and used the defensive momentum for a 41-17 victory in the FCCA Tip-Off Tournament.

The game was tied at 10-all after the first quarter, but the Lady Colonials (1-1) surged into a 19-10 halftime lead.

The momentum carried over into the second half with Albert Gallatin outscoring the Lady Cougars, 22-7.

Abby King scored 10 points for Albert Gallatin.

Belle Vernon 69, Quiqley Catholic 52 — The Belle Vernon girls carried the scoring advantage in all but the second quarter Friday night as the Lady Leopards opened the season at the Ambridge Tip-Off Tournament with a 69-52 win over Quigley Catholic.

The Lady Leopards (1-0) held leads of 21-15, 32-28 and 45-35 at the quarter breaks.

Ashley Russell led Belle Vernon with 16 points. Kelsey Green and Lindsay Steeber both scored 12, and Caitlyn Trombley added 11.

Beth-Center 49, Freedom 44 — The Beth-Center girls defeated host Freedom Saturday, 49-44, for the Freedom Tip-Off Tournament title behind Kinlee Whited’s MVP performance.

Whited scored 16 points in the victory to earn the tournament MVP.

The Lady Bulldogs (2-0) had the better of the play in the first and third quarters for a 30-15 scoring advantage. Freedom (1-1) carried the other two quarters, 29-20.

Beth-Center’s Olivia Greco scored 11 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Kennedy Kuhns added 10.

Jefferson-Morgan 43, Eden Christian Academy 23 — Jefferson-Morgan turned a one-point deficit at the end of the first half into a 6-point halftime lead as the Lady Rockets defeated Eden Christian Academy, 43-23, Saturday in the consolation game of the Freedom Tip-Off Tournament.

The Lady Rockets (1-1) finished out the win by outscoring Eden Christian in the second half, 24-10.

Anna Mattish led Jefferson-Morgan with 13 points. Erin Confortini added 12.

Eden Christian’s McKenzie King scored a game-high 14 points.

Knoch 51, Ringgold 44 — Ringgold’s Ashley Briscoe scored a game-high 28 points Saturday, but Knoch came away with a 51-44 win over the Lady Rams in the Montour Tip-Off Tournament.

Ringgold (0-2) rallied into a 25-23 halftime lead and held a slim 36-35 lead after three quarters.

California 59, South Side 36 — Led by tournament MVP Jenna Miller, the California girls captured the South Side Tip-Off Tournament Saturday with a 59-36 victory over the host team.

Miller scored a game-high 21 points, helping the Lady Trojans (2-0) to leads of 16-7, 35-12 and 49-24 at the quarter breaks.

Love’ Porter finished with 12 points. Bailey Vig, who scored eight points, was named to the all-tournament team.

Charleroi 69, Washington 41 — The Charleroi girls led from the first quarter to the end of the game Saturday night as the host squad defeated Washington, 69-41, in the title game of the Charleroi Tip-Off Tournament.

The Lady Cougars (2-0) led 12-8 after the first quarter, 30-18 at halftime, and 49-28 after three quarters.

Charleroi’s Kaitlyn Riley scored a game-high 18 points. Maria Claybaugh and Sierra Short both finished with 15.

Carmichaels 53, Monessen 38 — Carmichaels used a balanced attack to gradually pull away from Monessen for a 53-38 girls basketball victory in the consolation game of the Charleroi Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.

Kristina Aeschbacher led the Lady Mikes (1-1) with 14 points, while Megan Walker and Jadyn Barnish tallied 10 apiece.

Carmichaels jumped out to a 15-12 advantage after one period and led 23-17 at halftime and 41-28 after three frames.

Natalia Holmes led the Lady Greyhounds (0-2) with a game-high 20 points.

Boys basketball

Uniontown 57, Connellsville 55 — For the second consecutive evening, Uniontown boys basketball won a game where it didn’t play its best.

However, Rob Kezmarsky’s Red Raiders improved to 2-0 with a 57-55 victory over Connellsville on Saturday night in the Fayette County Coaches Association (FCCA) Tip-Off Tournament at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.

Uniontown trailed, 10-7, after the first quarter, but outscored the Falcons, 22-13, in the second for a 29-23 halftime lead. The Raiders extended their lead over Connellsville (0-2) to 47-33 with a 18-10 advantage in the third.

The Falcons dominated the fourth by outscoring Uniontown, 22-10, and had a chance to win the game when a Connellsville shooter was fouled at halftime court in the act of shooting and was given three foul shots with no time remaining but missed the first two, and the Falcons decided not to attempt the final shot.

Mike Jones led Uniontown in scoring with 14 points and teammate Lorenzo Oden followed-up his 23-point performance on Friday against Albert Gallatin with 12 against the Falcons.

Connellsville’s Seth Younkin led all scorers with 17. Teammates Trevon Clayton added 14 and Alek Detwiler was in double digits with 11.

Woodland Hills 79, Laurel Highlands 64 — The Mustangs led after the first quarter, but Woodland Hills took control of the game by halftime on its way to a 79-64 win over Laurel Highlands in the FCCA Tip-Off Tournament.

Woodland Hills (2-0) led 36-30 at halftime and 54-44 after three quarters.

Bryce Laskey led the way for the Mustangs (1-1) with a game-high 29 points. Hudson Novak added 11.

Calfornia 62, Jefferson-Morgan 23 — The California boys won the Geibel Catholic Tip-Off Tournament for the third year in a row Saturday night after the Trojans defeated Jefferson-Morgan, 62-23.

The Trojans (2-0) led 16-6, 29-13 and 39-17 at the quarter breaks, and then finished the game with a 23-6 flourish.

Kass Taylor scored a game-high 20 points for the Trojans.

Jalen Torres led the Rockets (1-1) with 15 points.

Albert Gallatin 69, Waynesburg Central 48 — The Albert Gallatin boys bookended strong quarters Saturday night for a 69-48 win over Waynesburg Central in the FCCA Tip-Off Tournament.

The Colonials (1-1) outscored the Raiders in the first and fourth quarters, 37-14. Waynesburg held a slight 34-32 lead in the middle quarters.

Albert Gallatin’s Nate Bricker scored a game-high 26 points. Marques Moore (17) and Tavian Mozie (10) were also in double digits.

Richard Bortz led the Raiders (0-2) with 13 points. Darton McIntire was held below his average with 12 points.

Geibel Catholic 78, Mapletown 25 — First-year coach Brian Henckel secured his first victory Saturday night as Geibel Catholic defeated Mapletown, 78-25, in the consolation game of the Geibel Catholic Tip-Off Tournament.

Enzo Fetsko poured in a game-high 27 points to lead the Gators (1-1). Cole Kendall added 12.

Ryan Carter scored seven for the Maples (0-2).

Monessen 84, Bishop Canevin 70 — Monessen trailed at halftime, but the Greyhounds put up 50 points in the second half Saturday night for an 84-70 victory in the consolation game of the Upper St. Clair Tip-Off Tournament over Bishop Canevin.

The Crusaders led 35-34 at halftime, but the Greyhounds surged into the lead with a 23-8 advantage in the third quarter.

Lyndon Henderson led Monessen with 27 points. Justice Rice added 20. Jaron Youngblood finished with 13 and Cory Fleming had 10.

Southmoreland 67, Mount Pleasant 28 — Southmoreland built a big halftime lead and then cruised to a 67-28 victory Saturday night over host Mount Pleasant in the Tom Traynor Tip-Off Tournament.

Brandon Stone led the Scotties (2-0) with 21 points. Zak Leighty and Tommy Pisula both scored 15.

Keith Kalp led the Vikings (0-2) with 13 points.

Norwin 58, Ringgold 42 — The Norwin boys defeated Ringgold Saturday night in the second day of the Tom Traynor Tip-Off Tournament, 58-42.

Anthony Tampena led the Rams (1-1) with 10 points.
