Uniontown hires Lloyd as football coach

Uniontown Area School District hired Cedric Lloyd on Monday night in a special school board meeting held at the high school.

Lloyd, who served as assistant coach and defensive specialist in his last stint at Pike High School in Indianapolis from 2015 to finishing up this football season, is the first black head football coach in the school’s history, according to Uniontown Superintendent Dr. Charles Machesky.

Lloyd replaces longtime veteran coach John Fortugna, who recently stepped down after 22 years as head coach.

“He is the perfect candidate for the current time, and the perfect candidate for the future,” Machesky said.

Lloyd plans on making Uniontown his last stop on a long coaching journey and turn around the fortunes of Red Raider football on the field. He also wanted to see a resurgence in the junior high program.

The district had 28 official applications for the position with five candidates being selected for interviews. Two candidates were district employees, and the remaining two hailed from North Carolina and Richmond, Virginia.

Lloyd has experience working with inner-city schools and dealing with behavioral problems.

Machesky stated that Lloyd said during the interview process that he felt wanted by everyone he talked to in Uniontown and it was a good fit for him.

Lloyd was given a five-year contract by the district. He will serve as the Act 138 Attendance Officer in addition to being the football coach with a salary of $75,500.
