Rice scores his 1,000th-career point in Greyhounds’ win over Jayhawks
Justice Rice scored his 1,000th-career point in Monessen’s 69-39 non-section victory over Jeannette on Thursday in a consolation game at the Franklin Regional boys basketball tournament.
Rice, who finished with a game-high 22 points, reached the milestone on a free throw with 1.5 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Rice’s career total now stands at 1,013. He also added five assists for coach Joe Salvino’s Greyhounds (2-2).
Teammates Lyndon Henderson (12) and Jaron Youngblood (11) were also in double figures scoring. Youngblood pulled down eight rebounds and Henderson was credited with seven.
Monessen was in control from the start and held a 19-15 lead after the first. The Greyhounds outscored the Jayhawks, 11-7, in the second for a 30-22 halftime lead.
Monessen had a 20-13 advantage in the third and 19-4 in the fourth.
Jeannette’s Rylan Bumoskey put in nine points and Robert Kennedy added eight.
The Jayhawks fell to 0-4 this season.
The Greyhounds are back in action on Wednesday in a girl-boy doubleheader for their season opener. The girls take the court at 5:30 and the girls at 7:30. Both games are against Jeannette.
