Laurel Highlands sweeps Belle Vernon in swimming

Laurel Highlands swept Belle Vernon in their Section 1-AAA swim meet Thursday with the Mustangs winning 93-65 and the Fillies triumphing 91-61.

In the boys meet, LH’s Jacob Johnson and the Leopards’ Robert Spekis each place first in two individual events and contributed to a relay victory.

Johnson won the 50 freestyle (:24.06) and the 100 backstroke (1:13.83) and combined with Jamey Siebart, Brandon Thomas and Dylan Rice to propel the Mustangs to a win in the 200 medley relay in a WPIAL qualifying time of 1:50.28.

Spekis took first in the 100 butterfly (1:01.29) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.51) and teamed up with Johnathan Tielsch, Alex Miller and Tucker West to win the 400 relay, hitting the WPIAL qualifying time in all three events.

Dan Schiffbauer also was a multiple individual winner for the Mustangs, topping the field in the 200 freestyle (2:02.34) and the 500 freestyle (5:45.05).

Thomas, Rice, Jonathon Lewis and Logan Kordich won the 200 freestyle relay (1:43.64) and Thomas also won the 200 individual medley in a WPIAL qualifying time of 2:13.88 while Lewis took first in the 100 freestyle (:56.44).

Also hitting the WPIAL qualifying time was Belle Vernon’s second-place team in the 200 medley relay of Miller, Spekis, West and Tielsch (1:52.61)

There were no multiple individual winners in the girls meet, where LH took first in eight of the events.

Individual winners for the Fillies were Gwyneth Hamilton in the 200 freestyle (2:06.74, WPIAL qualifier), Lexie Kostelnik in the 200 individual medley (2:17.65), Jenna Roscoe in the 50 freestyle (:26.69, WPIAL qualifier), Miranda Yauger in the 100 butterfly (1:08.91), Rachel Roscoe in the 100 freestyle (:58.84) and Kristen Bane in the 500 freestyle (5:59.27).

Yauger, Jenna Roscoe, Britney Galik and Maddie George led LH to victory in the 200 medley relay (2:12.15), while Hamilton, Kostelnik, Bane and Rachel Roscoe help the Fillies win the 200 freestyle relay in a WPIAL qualifying time of 1:50.95.

Also hitting the WPIAL qualifying time were a pair of LH second-place finishers: Rachel Roscoe in the 200 freestyle (2:08.36) and Bane in the 200 individual medley (2:27.50).

Individual winners for the Lady Leopards were Ursiny MacKenzie in the 100 backstroke (1:10.53) and Ashley Beck in the 100 breaststroke (1:33.91). Ursiny teamed up with Morgan Susick, Maxine Brandt and Hannah Staller to win the 400 freestyle relay (4:35.56).
