Lady Scotties too much for Propel Andrew Street, 51-9
CONNELLSVILLE TWP. — Southmoreland needed little time on Wednesday to secure its berth in the Geibel Catholic Girls Basketball Holiday Tournament championship game. The Lady Scotties scored the first 23 points of the game against a young Propel Andrew Street team on the way to a 51-9 win.
All of the points for PAS were scored by sophomore forward Majesty Alford conventional three field goals and a 3-point basket.
Alford actually had her team’s only consecutive points on a basket and trey that set the score at 23-5 early in the second quarter. She added a basket a few minutes later and scored again in the third quarter on a long jump shot.
Senior Olivia Porter led the Lady Scotties with 26 points, while sophomore Maggie Moore just missed double figures with nine points.
Porter scored the game’s first five points, had 13 by halftime, and added an additional 13 points in the second half. She became the school’s fifth girls basketball player and 10th overall player to reach 1,000 points just prior to the Christmas break.
Southmoreland coach Brian Pritts substituted throughout the game and used a variety on combinations on the court.
“We got to work on a few things that we needed to,” Pritts said. “Hopefully we got a little confidence back after the way we headed into the break. We’re looking to continue that tomorrow.”
After winning its first four games, Southmoreland struggled in section losses to Keystone Oaks and Belle Vernon.
“This is Geibel’s tournament, and they have some nice players,” Pritts said. “Grace Nowicki is a standout player who can come through in the clutch. This is their home court and we’ll have to be ready because they’ll want to defend their home court.”
Southmoreland has won the last two Geibel holiday tournaments, including a thrilling 57-49 overtime game two seasons ago.
