Griffiths, Fundy win Excela Classic titles

Southmoreland’s Tyler Griffiths and Beth-Center’s Dominic Fundy closed the second day of wrestling Thursday at the 2016 Southmoreland/Excela Holiday Classic with individual titles.

Griffiths won a 13-2 major decision over Greensville’s JJ Rogue in the 132-pound final, while Fundy secured a 4-2 decision over Greensburg Salem’s Teegan Hahn in the 182-pound title bout.

Mount Pleasant’s Doug Bittner lost an 8-2 decision to Greensville’s Aarron Gelvin in the 113-pound final, and teammate Austin Mihalcik advanced to the 126-pound championship where he was pinned by Northern Bedford’s Zach Clark in 2:34.

Frazier’s Thayne Lawrence made it to the 145-pound finals before losing by fall in 2:37 to Conneaut Area’s Peyton Heam.

The Scotties’ Jaden Datz finished third at 160 pounds with his 3-2 decision over Norwin’s Kyle Turcovsky in the consolation bout.

The Vikings’ Damien George (8, 106) and Al Miscovich (5, 132) also made the awards podium.

The Bulldogs’ Jimmy Gywyer finished sixth at 120 pounds and teammate David Headlee was seventh at 285.

The Scotties’ Colt Harper finished eighth at 170 pounds, while Frazier’s Tyler Girvin placed sixth at 220.

Greenville won the team title with 191½ points. Mount Pleasant, with five place-winners, was ninth with 92 points. Host Southmoreland was 14th with 75½, edging Beth-Center by ½-point. Frazier finished 23rd with 46 points.
