Rochester defeats Apprentice, 77-68

The Rochester College men secured the first victory of the USCAA Basketball Championships Wednesday afternoon with a 77-68 Division I victory against Apprentice.

Rochester (23-5) led 34-29 at halftime and maintained the advantage in the final 20 minutes to advance to the Division I semifinals against Oakwood on Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Main Arena.

Angelo Griffis led Rochester with 22 points and nine rebounds. Nick Tutu finished with 10, Jeroen De Baat scored 11, and Justin Nafso added 10.

Jay Melendez had a double-double for Apprentice (12-10) with game-high totals of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Gainey also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Cameron Perry added 15 points.

Apprentice plays Florida National in a consolation game on Thursday at 11:15 a.m. in Maltho.

Oakwood 87, Florida National 79 — Oakwood held a 10-point lead at halftime and made the advantage stand to advance to the Division I quarterfinals against Rochester College.

Oakwood (15-9) had five players in double figures, led by Ollie Felps 20 points. Brandon Daniel scored 19. Ronnie Abrams (18), Maxwell Caines (11), and Domonic Pierre Louis (10) were also in double figures.

Regan O’Rourke led Florida National (17-10) with a game-high 28 points. Alvaro Simoza finished with 12.

Concordia-Alabama 70, SUNY Canton 66 — The game was tied at 38 at halftime, but Concordia-Alabama pulled ahead in the final 20 minutes to advance to the Division I semifinals against Washington Adventist on Thursday at 10 p.m. in the Main Arena.

Shaquille Duncan led Concordia-Alambama with a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds. Kendrick Atwood finished with 16 points, Guy Barnes had 13, and Jamie Washington added 12.

Sam Annorh scored 21 points for SUNY Canton, who will play Berea on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Main Arena in the consolation bracket. Kam Peterkin (14), Romario Fletcher (12), and Vonallen Pickett (10) were also in double figures for SUNY Canton.

Washington Adventist 75, Berea 71 — Berea’s second-half rally was a couple field goals short as Washington Adventist advance to the Division I semifinals against Concordia-Alabama.

Washington Adventist (14-11) led at halftime, 38-25.

Tyrus Fleetwood led Washington Adventist with a game-high 24 points. Eric Lindsey and Jerry McFadden added 10 points apiece.

Corey Wise led Berea (16-8) with 22 points. Richard Parker finished with 16 and Tyler Huff added 10.

St. Joseph’s (Vt.) 75, Maine-Presque Isle 71 — St. Joseph’s rallied in the final 20 minutes, outscoring Maine-Presque Isle 52-37 for a come-from-behind victory in a Division II preliminary round game.

St. Joseph’s (19-9) advances to play top-seeded Berkeley College (N.Y.) today at 5:30 p.m. in Maltho. Maine-Presque Isle (13-11) slips into the consolation bracket and will play Central Maine Community College at 1:15 p.m. in Maltho.

Maine-Presque Isle held a 34-23 lead at halftime.

Antonio Gordon came off the bench to lead St. Joseph’s with a game-high 29 points. Travis Threewitts was also in double figures with 12. Kareem Brown grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Kevin Collins led Maine-Presque Isle with 25 points. Brandon McGill finished with 13 and Chase Vicaire added 12.
