Rohanna unable to get rolling in 3rd round
Rachel Rohanna was unable to build on the momentum of her second round in Saturday’s third round, finishing with a 1-over 73 to slip down the Kia Classic leaderboard.
The Waynesburg Central graduate opened the day in a tie for ninth place, but slipped into a tie for 25th at 4-under 212.
Lydia Ko stands atop the leaderboard at 14-under 202 heading into today’s final round at Aviara Golf in Carlsbad, Calif.
Rohanna bogeyed the second hole, but recovered the lost stroke with a birdie four holes later to move back to 5-under for the tournament.
Back-to-back bogeys on the back nine on Nos. 12 and 13 cost her two strokes to par, but she managed to gain one of those lost strokes back with a birdie on No. 16.
“I made a ton of putts. I just didn’t hit the ball that great,” said Rohanna. “Not that I hit (the ball) that poorly.
“I’m happy I came out with a 1-over.”
Rohanna entered Saturday’s third round on the heels of a strong final nine holes where she finished with a 29 on the strength of her first career hole-in-one and five birdies.
“I definitely thought there was carry over. I hit some shots in the afternoon (Friday) to keep that feeling going,” said Rohanna.
She hit 9-of-14 fairways and only 8-of-18 greens in regulation. Rohanna needed just 24 putts, however, and had an average driving distance of 262 yards.
“I made a 40-footer to save par and a couple 10-footers that were critical for my round,” said Rohanna.
Rohanna opened with a 73, but came back with a 66 in the second round. Rohanna hopes that trend continues into today’s final round.
“If I do nothing crazy bad, I can move up the leaderboard a little bit,” added Rohanna.
