LH sends gaggle to WPIAL finals

A handful of athletes from Laurel Highlands qualified for the WPIAL Class AAA track and field championships with qualifying performances at West Mifflin Thursday.

Christian Jones and Sven Rabshal led the way with 5-9 efforts in the high jump.

They were joined by the 4×400 erlay team of Elijah Guynn, Russell Blaho, Austin Saletrik and Jarves Crews, who finished in seventh place.

Tim Rice finished second in the javelin with a throw of 175 feet. and Zack Mitchell finished fifth with a discus throw of 124 feet, 7 inches.

Two pole vaulters — Jonathan Ek and Hunter Sloboda — met the 11-6 standard for qualifying.

Iliesa Salauca finished third in the high hurdles with a time of 16.16, while Austin Saletrik doubled his pleasure by finishing eighth in the 300 hurdles in 43.00.

The LH girls will be well represented also, as Siteri Tale took sixth in the shot put (33-9) and fifth in the discus (99 feet).

Pole vaulter Cassandra Phelan met the 9-3 standard and advanced and Delanie Hostetler joined Tale in the shot put with a seventh place distance of 32-9.

Kate Sutton placed seventh with a javelin throw of 113 feet.

Ashley Galderisi qualified twice, finishing third in the 200 (25.52) and with her fourth-place finishing 4×100 relay team (50.43) that also included Aaliyah Howell, Annika Baerman and Erica Tarr.

Baerman also placed eighth in the 100 in 13.18 to qualify.

Grace Chambers placed sixth in 51.03 in the 400.

Baseball

Albert Gallatin 6, Waynesburg Central 2 – Nate Torbich pitched a complete game four-hitter for his third win of the season as Albert Gallatin defeated Waynesburg Central, 6-2, in a non-section baseball game at Waynesburg University.

Torbich (3-4) walked four and struck out four. He did not allow a hit after the third inning and retired 13 of the last 15 batters he faced. Torbich was supported by Adam Simon, who had two singles and four RBIs.

Joey Embacher doubled and Paul Dunham walked three times and scored three times from the lead off spot for the Colonials.

Hunter Robinson was the tough luck loser for the Raiders (6-12). He pitched six innings, giving up only three hits and four runs. He walked two and struck out 12. He also doubled at the plate.

AG visits Keystone Oaks on Friday. Waynesburg finished the season 6-12.

California 10, Charleroi 1 – California tuned up for the WPIAL Class A playoffs with a 10-1 non-section win at home over Charleroi, which also tuned up for the Class AA playoffs.

Brandon Powell got the pitching win for California (17-2), while the Cougars fell to 11-7 and await their playoff fate today.

Casey Zajicek was 3-4 with two doubles and two RBI for California, while Louden Conte was 2-4 with an RBI. Nate Luketich and John DeFranco both were 1-2 with a combined four runs scored.

No other details were available from Charleroi.
