Hill advances to NCAA cross country final
Although the California (Pa.) women’s cross country team missed out on advancing as a team, the Vulcans’ Summer Hill qualified as an individual Saturday at the NCAA Division II Regional Cross Country Championship at Cooper’s Lake Campground.
Hill, a junior, finished third on the 6K course in a time of 22:51 to earn one of the automatic qualifying berths into the NCAA Division II National Championships on Nov. 19 in St. Leo, Fla.
The California women finished fourth in the team standings with 161 points, with the top three teams, Shippensburg (57), Bloomsburg (66), and Seton Hill (146), advancing to the national championship.
The Griffins’ Chelsia Poole finished second overall in 22:43. Shippensburg’s Casey Norton won in 22:21.
The Vulcans’ Alyson Pierce finished 30th overall in 24:13, followed by Madison Thrasher (35, 24:27), Uniontown’s Katie Burgess (39, 24:32), Shae Grinell (55, 24:54), and Karleigh Thompson (62, 25:14).
The Cal men finished 16th with 403 points. The Shippensburg men won the team title with 41 points. Lock Haven (63), Edinboro (63), and Concord (156) also advanced as teams.
Lock Haven’s Addison Monroe won the individual title by covering the 10K course in 32:24.
Neftali Jimenez led the Vulcans home in 49th place with a time of 35:23. Micah Colson (71, 36:05), Joe Uliano (93, 37:18), Brett George (94, 37:18), Caleb Foster (96, 37:20), and Lenny Verdetto (103, 38:22) also ran for California.
Women’s volleyball
Shippensburg 3, California (Pa.) 0 — The first couple sets were close, but Shippensburg pulled away in the third set to sweep past visiting California in conference action.
The Raiders won by the scores, 25-20, 27-25, 25-16.
California is 10-5 in the PSAC and 18-8 overall, while Shippensburg improves to 11-4 in the conference and 24-5 overall.
Seairra Barrett (14) and Danielle Hayes (13) led the Vulcans in kills, while Tina Bellhy finished with a team-high six blocks. Megan Litoborski had 35 assists. Ashley Leto led the Vulcans with 19 digs, while Hays and Litoborski both finished with 12.
