Vulcans suffer 78-53 loss to Virginia State
California University of Pennsylvania suffered a 78-53 setback to Virginia State on Friday in the opening day of the Virginia State Tip-Off Classic.
The Vulcans (0-1) are under the guidance of first-year head coach Kent McBride.
The Trojans (1-0) played three exhibition games against Division I programs, including a game against No. 1 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Cal U freshman Ramon Creighton tallied a team-high 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range in his collegiate debut. Creighton, who hails from Pittsburgh and played for Taylor Allderdice High School, added five rebounds in 24 minutes.
Daniel Sapp scored 10 points for the Vulcans, while teammates Rashawn Browne and Mike Stevenson added seven in their career starts. Junior Tony Richardson had six rebounds off the bench.
Cal shots 33.3 percent (19-of-57) from the field and 35 percent (7-of-20) from three-point range.
Virginia State was 29-of-60 from the field for 48.3 percent and was 14-of-21 from the free-throw line. the Trojans held a 44-35 edge in rebounds and scored 42 points inside the paint.
Juniors Richard Granberry and Brice Rowe scored 11 for Virginia State. Junior Waymond Wright had eight assists for the Trojans.
The Vulcans return to action later tonight when they face St. Augustine’s (N.C.) at 6 p.m.
