Women win, men lose
The women’s teams from California and Waynesburg universities posted wins on Saturday, while the men from both schools suffered defeats in the young basketball season.
California (Pa.) split at Kutztown in the first day of its two-day swing through eastern Pennsylvania. Both Vulcans teams play at Mansfield Sunday.
Cal’s women (3-0) got a career high 27 points from junior forward Seairra Barrett and beat Kutztown, 74-52 Saturday afternoon. Sophomore guard Abbey Sporio of Elizabeth Forward scored a career high 13 off the bench for Cal. Precious Martin added 11 and Miki Glenn 10.
The Golden Bears (1-2) got a team-high 13 points from Kalee Fuegel.
Waynesburg’s women made the trip to Erie worthwhile with an 87-79 win over Defiance in the second day of the Penn State Behrend College tournament.
Addy Knetzer led the Yellow Jackets with 22 points and tied Haley Delaney for the rebounding lead with eight each. Delaney added 12 points, while Monica Starre and Katie Gehlmann scored 14 each.
Defiance center Kelsey Tietje led all scorers with 29 points and added 13 rebounds. Defiance fell to 1-1, while Waynesburg improved to 2-1.
The Waynesburg men lost their opener by a 78-62 score at home to Muskingum.
Jarrell Marsh led the winners with 22 points, while Marcus Dempsey added 16. Joshua Keyes failed to score, but led both teams in rebounding with 14 caroms.
Jon Knab scored 14 points to lead Waynesburg (0-1), while Marcus Wallace added 10 and Nick Valentic added nine. Muskingum upped its record to 2-0.
The California men fell to 2-2 overall, 0-1 in PSAC play with an 80-65 loss at Kutztown.
Ryan Connolly poured in 20 points to lead Kutztown (3-0, 1-0). Josh Johnson added 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Dan Cuevas scored 15 and Anthony Lee 12.
California got 14 points from Ramon Creighton, 12 from Robel Teckle and 10 more from Daniel Sapp. Tony Richardson plucked 11 rebounds for the Vulcans.
While both Cal teams visit Mansfield today, Waynesburg’s women host Carnegie Mellon and the men travel to Frostburg State on Tuesday.
