No. 8 Vulcans top Gannon, 35-14

California broke open a close game with 21 second half points in Saturday’s 35-14 win over Gannon at Adamson Stadium.

The No. 8-ranked Vulcans scored three touchdowns through the air and two on the ground to improve to 7-0 and drop Gannon to 4-4.

Nick Grissom ran for 68 yards and scored a touchdown, while John Franklin III scored on one of his three carries.

Also crossing the goal line for Cal were receivers Garry Brown, who caught nine for 95 yards, Tom Greene, who caught five for 72 and Luke Smorey, who grabbed four for 38.

Quarterback Michael Keir completed 20 of 30 passes for 212 yards and two scores, as he overcame four interceptions to post the win. Marcus Prather passed for the other score, hitting Smorey late in the second quarter to put Cal ahead for good, 14-7.

Zach Phillips and Marcus Jones scored for Gannon and Jones led the ground game with 79 yards on six carries.

The Vulcan secondary kept all Gannon receivers under 50 receiving yards for the game.

Cal travels to Erie to take on Mercyhurst net Saturday.
