Previewing ‘WWE Cell’
Raw presents Hell in a Cell tonight on the WWE Network and while the show looks decent on paper, there is a huge question leading into the event.
As of the deadline of this column, the main event still has not been decided.
One of the three Cell matches will main event, but which one?
It is easy to eliminate the Roman Reigns and Rusev bout for the U.S. title as it is the least intriguing of the three. But which of the other two will close the show?
The matches I am talking about are the Universal title match between Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins, as well as the women’s title match between Sasha Banks and Charlotte.
If it were up to our readers, there is no doubt which match would finish the show.
“The women’s match should be the main event,” said McKenna “Boots” DeUnger, of Charleroi. “It is their turn.
“Will it be last?”
Before I answer, happy 11th birthday, Boots!
Do I think it will be the last match tonight? No, I don’t.
Should it be?
Yes.
The WWE has never had a women’s match main event a pay-per-view (PPV), or special event as they are now known, and that time should be now.
There are many signs pointing to it main-eventing and considering that the show is taking place in Boston, Banks’ hometown, just think how into the match the crowd would be knowing they were seeing history with its hometown girl making history.
Add in the fact that Charlotte is 12-0 all-time in PPV matches, the first WWE women’s main event seeing Charlotte losing her first PPV match in Banks’ hometown would end the show with the crowd going home happy.
But I don’t think it will main event the show and here is why.
Just a few weeks ago, the WWE announced that Banks and Charlotte would main event Raw, becoming only the second women’s match to do so.
Why haven’t they announced the main event for tonight yet?
If the WWE was going to make history, I would think that they would announce it in advance to garner more publicity about it. Every reader who contacted me this week via email or social media wants to see the women’s on last.
While I could be wrong, and I hope I am, about which match will close the show, something tells me that Owens and Rollins will close it out. Another reason I would lean towards the women is that Owens, and the Universal title, are playing second fiddle to Chris Jericho and his “List of Jericho.”
If the women’s title match is not the main event, don’t be surprised if it opens the show.
Then again, if it does, the crowd will be livid the rest of the night and could turn on the in-ring product.
Other matches include The New Day defending the Raw tag titles against Cesaro and Sheamus, TJ Perkins defends the Cruiserweight title against Brian Kendrick, Enzo & Cass take on Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, Bayley faces Dana Brooke, and there is six-man cruiserweight match on the preshow.
McMahon upset at Raw?
Several reputable sources said this week that Vince McMahon flipped out backstage during Raw when fans started cheering for Brock Lesnar during Paul Heyman’s promo against Goldberg.
During the segment, the crowd started chanting “Goldberg sucks.”
If McMahon did not want a pro-Lesnar reaction, then they should have held off a week, bringing him back as Raw was in Minnesota, Lesnar’s home state.
This led to a great question from Bobby in Uniontown who asked if it is possible that the WWE piped in the Goldberg chants last week on Raw.
We touched on that in last weeks column and while I will not say it is what happened for sure, it is always possible.
Besides, didn’t McMahon have a slogan for years in the WWE, something about, “Anything can happen in the WWE?”
WWE releases numbers
The WWE held its Third Quarter conference call for investors Thursday and the numbers are relatively on par with 2015 during the same three-month period.
The big news is that the WWE is up to 1.46 million subscribers for the WWE Network and the company has four times the amount of content that it had when it debuted in February, 2014.
