Weather stats

I have always been an advocate for the weather and climate of our area.

Climate is defined as what to expect and weather is defined as what you get. Climate deals with the past. Weather usually deals with the present and the future. Years and years of weather data is collected, studied and then averaged over these long periods to come up with averages. We have been collecting weather data in Uniontown since 1913, while Pittsburgh weather records go back into the 1860s. Weather averages could also be called a collection of the extremes since they contain the floods, the droughts and the run of the mill days. The law of large numbers is important since the more years of data we have from the past the better picture we have for our averages.

Summers in our area are moderately warm with a few periods of hot and humid weather. Winters are moderately cold and snowy, however, the best weather occurs in what we call the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. Temperatures during the months of March, April and May and again in September, October and November average 60 degrees for the high and 40 degrees for the morning low. Certainly, sweeter weather, but also many days with afternoons in the 70s and a few 80s. The fall months also tend to be our dry months with lots of sunshine for great outdoor activities.

Situated in the Middle Atlantic region also provides for an interesting and variety of weather. I think it would be rather boring to have the same weather all the time.

Uniontown and Southwestern Pennsylvania are located in the comfort zone, just north of the searing heat and humidity of the south and just south of the blistering winds and cold of the north. Not too much of the extremes and with ample rainfall and four glorious seasons. Wow, what a great place to live!
