LH grad Browne eager to return to cage

It would be an understatement to say that Laurel Highlands grad and Uniontown resident Nick Browne is ready to return to the cage on Saturday at the Meadows Racetrack & Casino for King of the Cage: Harms Way.

Browne, who wrestled and played football for the Mustangs, enters the cage undefeated at 6-0, with two submissions and two strikes stoppages in his professional career.

Browne will meet Troy Lamson (6-1) in a lightweight bout on Saturday. The Uniontown Fight Club product hasn’t competed since Nov. 25 when he defeated Rmandel Cameron (5-2) by split decision. Browne, who is affectionately known as “Nyquil,” was scheduled to fight D’Juan Owens (14-10-1) on Aug. 13 but due to funding issues, the card was cancelled.

“It will be good to knock off the ring rust,” Browne said. “Ten months is a long time to have off in the fight game, but I have great training partners that have helped me prepare for this fight.

“I am really excited to fight for the King of the Cage promotion. It is ranked in the top seven or eight in the world and top four in the United States as a promotion and they set up everything really nice and the fights go off without any problems. It is nice to be fighting at the Meadows Racetrack & Casino. It is a neat venue and close to home. I hope to win this fight and possibly get another fight for the King of the Cage promotion. The next one may be in California against a top-level opponent, but I have to focus on this fight first.”

Defeating Lamson will be no easy task for Browne, who is trained by Uniontown Fight Club owner Bill Bosley, as the former Michigan State wrestler won his first six pro fights via stoppage (4 submissions, two knockouts). Lamson lost his first fight in his most recent bout to Justin Jaynes.

“He (Lamson) is definitely a tough guy and lost to a former Bellator veteran by decision,” Browne said. “However, he hasn’t faced the level of competition I have. He is a former college wrestler, but he wasn’t a starter on the team or anything. I also have a wrestling background and believe that we are equal when it comes to wrestling.

“I believe I have a strong advantage in the stand-up game and with my jiu-jitsu. He usually uses jabs to set up his takedowns and tries to turn most of his fights into his wrestling matches. He does have great conditioning and finished a lot of his fights in the third round. I will be ready for him, though, and I have been working very hard in my training camp and am ready to go.”

In addition to training at Uniontown Fight Club, Browne has also been working with Pittsburgh-based fighters in Mark Cherico and Mike Wilkins.

“I have been working with Mike (Wilkins) at Stout’s gym in Pittsburgh, which is one of the top gyms for MMA in the area,” Browne said. “I also go to Mark’s (Cherico) gym. Those guys really help me out a great deal. We really push each other to move on to fight for the top promotions in the world.”

The event will be broadcasted on tape delay by MAVTV.

“It is really exciting to have the event on TV even if it’s a tape delay,” Browne said. “That really helps with exposure and hopefully someone will see my fight and take notice.”
