McGuffey edges Mount Pleasant, 24-17

Mount Pleasant held a halftime lead over McGuffey in a key Interstate Conference matchup but the Highlanders scored two third-quarter touchdowns en route to a 24-17 victory on Friday at McGuffey.

Johnny Yester’s four-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gave the Vikings (2-1, 3-1) a 17-10 lead after Bradley Tait’s PAT that Mount Pleasant took into halftime.

McGuffey’s Connor Romestan scored on a six-yard run that tied the game at 17-17 after Max Nemeth’s PAT in the third, and the Highlanders (2-0, 3-1) took the lead when Teague Nicolella pulled in a nine-yard touchdown reception from Marcus Czulewicz for a 24-17 lead in the third after Brendan Crowe’s PAT.

The Vikings took the early lead in the first when Chris Wagner scored on a two-yard run and lead 7-0 after Tait’s PAT. Wagner ran for 140 yards on 19 carries.

Czulewicz tied the game on a 57-yard run in the first after Nicolella’s PAT.

Both teams traded field goals as Tait nailed one from 32 yards out and Nicolella connected on a 37 yarder for a 10-10 score.

Yester was 10-of-19 for 161 yards.
