Vulcans suffer tough 5-4 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan in women’s tennis

California University of Pa. dropped a close women’s tennis decision to West Virginia Wesleyan, 5-4, at Glen Creek Tennis Club on Friday.

The Vulcans (3-6) picked up two wins in doubles. At the first position, Cal’s Veronika Mikulis and Alyssa Savill defeated Cecila Martinez Oliver and Estel Fernandez, 8-2. Jasi Witherspoon and Katie Olson won at No. 2 doubles over Rebekka Heigermoser and Mariona Junyer, 8-3.

Cal’s other two wins came in singles as Mikulis steamrolled Martinez Oliver at the second slot, 6-0, 6-0, and Olson rolled past Fernanez at the fourth position, 6-2, 6-2.

West Virginia Wesleyan improves to 10-5.

The Vulcans host Seton Hill in a PSAC West match 2 p.m. Sunday.
