Vatakis lifts Lady Hounds over Cal
COAL CENTER — Dana Vatakis pitched a one-hitter and contributed three extra base hits to lead Monessen’s Lady Greyhounds to a 10-1 win over California’s Lady Trojans in Section 2-A softball action.
Monessen coach Bo Teets praised Vatakis and said, “It was just another day for Dana, and she’s pretty much an everyday softball player.
Teets also praised the Lady Trojans and said, “California is a playoff team and in position to make the playoffs, and we didn’t take them lightly coming in.”
Cooper stole third base, and after striking out Monessen’s Mattie Telegraphis, California pitcher Bre Trusler took a line drive to the mid-section off of Carly Rock’s bat in a scary moment, which also brought Cooper across home plate to make it a 3-0 affair.
Fortunately, Trusler was able to shake off the injury and stayed in the game, striking out Monessen’s Gabby Simpson to end the inning.
“I just want to do the best I can for the team because if I do good then I feel like the team’s going to do good,” said Trusler.
After both teams were scoreless for the next three innings, Monessen added four runs in the top of the sixth inning to make it a 10-0 game.
A throwing error advanced Vatakis to third base and she was able to cross home plate for Monessen’s 10th run when Cooper reached first base on a throwing error.
