Brazill national finalist
California University of Pa. kicker Will Brazill is a finalist for the Fred Mitchell Award to be presented to the nation’s top collegiate kicker based on excellence on the field and for community service during the offseason.
Brazill is one of 13 finalists from FCS, Division II and III, NAIA and NJCAA for the award to be presented on Monday, Dec. 11.
The senior tied for fifth in NCAA Division II with 107 points, averaging 8.9 points per game. Brazill made 20-of-24 field goals for a percentage of .833 field-goal percentage to rank 10th in the country, including a career-long 47-yard field goal against Seton Hill. He also made 47-of-47 point-after attempts.
Brazill finished his career with 282 points to rank fourth all-time. He is second in Cal U history with 37 field goals (78.7 percent). Brazill made 171-of-176 extra-point attempts.
Brazill, a parks and recreation management major, participated in a variety of community service programs, including a bone marrow drive, improving youth baseball fields and area Lenten fish fry. He completed a summer internship with Buffalo Niagara RiverKeeper.
Basketball
Parsons top athlete
California University of Pa. senior forward Shatara Parsons was named the PSAC West Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for her play last week.
Parsons averaged 25.3 points, 8 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in three games, reaching 1,000 career points with a 27-point, 13-rebound performance Saturday in a 61-38 win at Bloomsburg. She scored a career-high 33 points Sunday in the Vulcans’ 78-69 win at East Stroudsburg.
Track & field
Means receives league honor
California University of Pa. junior Jae’Len Means was selected the PSAC Track Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Youngstown State Icebreaker last weekend. Means had the second-fastest time in the country in the 60-meter dash with a personal-best time of 6.84 seconds. He placed fourth in the prelims with a time of 6.910 seconds.
Swimming
Zimcosky swims in nationals
Ohio University freshmen and Geibel Catholic graduate Emily Zimcosky made the consolation finals in two events last week at the 2017 Winter National Championships.
Zimcosky finished 12th in the prelims of the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.95. She finished seventh in the ‘B’ consolation in a time of 1:48.18.
She finished 18th in the preliminary heat of 100 freestyle with a time of 50.03 seconds. Zimcosky placed third in the ‘C’ final with a personal-best time of 49.84 seconds.
