Trinity tops Connellsville girls
Connellsville was right with Section 3-AAAAA leader Trinity, but a four-point fourth quarter did in the Lady Falcons in a 41-34 loss to the Lady Hillers Thursday night at Connellsville.
Trinity held only a five-point lead at halftime, 23-18, but the Lady Falcons tied it with a 12-7 third-quarter scoring edge. But Trinity outscored Connellsville, 11-4, in the final eight minutes to pull out the win that kept the Lady Hillers perfect (7-0) in section games and 14-1 overall. Connellsville fell to 7-8 overall and 5-2 in section games, both section losses coming against Trinity.
Sierra Kotchman led all scorers with 19 points for Trinity and Madison Wiltrout paced the Lady Falcons with 14.
Connellsville travels to Pine-Richland Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. start and hosts Ringgold in a section game Monday.

East Allegheny 59, Brownsville 38 – East Allegheny wiped out a 30-24 Brownsville lead with a 16-5 run late in the third quarter of Thursday’s 59-38 Section 2-AAA win.
The Lady Falcons never recovered, as undefeated East Allegheny ran off with a 19-3 fourth-quarter scoring edge for the win.
Amani Johnson scored 36, two fewer than the entire Brownsville team managed, to lead the Lady Wildcats (14-0, 7-0).
Alie Seto paced Brownsville (6-10, 3-4) with 19 points.
Brownsville travels to Charleroi on Monday.

Greensburg Central Catholic 62, Carmichaels 19 – Greensburg Central Catholic held Carmichaels scoreless through the first quarter and allowed only six points in the first half of a 62-19 Section 3-AA girls basketball game Thursday at Carbon.
Meanwhile, the Lady Centurions scored 13 in the first quarter and 18 more in the second for a 31-6 lead at the break. GCC upped the lead with a 23-5 edge in the third quarter before the teams played to an 8-8 tie in the final quarter.
Brittany Stawovy’s 26 points paced GCC (10-3, 8-0).

West Greene 74, Hundred 7 – West Greene took no prisoners in a 74-7 win at Hundred (W.Va.) Thursday night.
The Lady Pioneers took a 33-1 lead through the first quarter and stretched it to 56-5 at halftime. West Greene only scored eight in the third quarter, but didn’t give up any and topped it off with a 12-2 edge in the final eight minutes.
McKenna Lampe and Kaitlyn Rizor scored 16 apiece for West Greene (12-2) and Madison Lampe added 14 and Savannah Pettit 12. Hundred fell to 2-10.

Charleroi 48, South Allegheny 26 – The Charleroi defense held South Allegheny to single digits in each quarter Thursday night as the visiting Lady Cougars cruised to a 48-26 Section 2-AAA victory.
The Lady Cougars (5-1, 11-4) led 15-6, 26-12 and 38-20 at the quarter breaks.
Kaitlyn Riley scored a game-high 16 points for Charleroi. Maria Claybaugh added 11.
Alyssa Kennedy led the Lady Gladiators (3-4, 9-5) with nine points.

Greensburg Salem 70, Laurel Highlands 57 – Megan Kallock scored half of the Lady Lions’ total Thursday night, leading Greensburg Salem to a 70-57 Section 3-AAAAA victory over visiting Laurel Highlands.
Kallock poured in 35 points as the Lady Lions improved to 5-2 in the section and 7-8 overall. Nikki Mellinger added 10.
Kylie Miller led the Fillies (1-6, 1-14) with 21 points. Meg McDonald added 16.

Ringgold 50, Cornell 40 – The Ringgold girls took a break from section action Thursday night and came away with a 50-40 win over visiting Cornell.
Ringgold (7-7) led 17-13 after the first quarter and 23-20 at halftime. The Lady Rams outscored the visitors in the second half, 27-20.
Ashley Briscoe led Ringgold with a game-high 16 points.

Mount Pleasant 44, Derry 31 – Mount Pleasant held a 3-point lead after the first quarter and didn’t give it up for a 44-31 Section 3-AAAA road victory Thursday night.
The Lady Vikings (6-2, 10-5) led 11-8, 23-15 and 30-19 at the quarter breaks.
Colleen Trainer scored 11 for Mount Pleasant.

California 61, Serra Catholic 27 – California placed four girls in double figures in Thursday’s 61-27 home win over Serra Catholic in Section 3-AA girls basketball action.
Bailey Vig led the way with 16, Love Porter added 13, Jenna Miller 11 and Grace Roberts 10.
Aaliyah Coleman and Gigi Mele Madigan paced Serra Catholic with eight points each.
The win lifts Cal to 15-1 overall and 7-1 in section games, while Serra Catholic fell to 5-7, 3-5.
Boys Basketball
West Greene 78, Frazier 51 – Kolton Rush and Craig Weaver each posted double-doubles as West Greene topped Frazier, 78-51, in non-section boys basketball action Thursday night at West Greene.
Rush led with 27 points and added 10 rebounds, while Weaver pulled in 20 rebounds and scored 25 points for the Pioneers (9-4).
Nathan Brudnock added 16 points for West Greene. Frazier (4-11) got 15 points from Justin Novak.
Swimming
Penn Trafford (women) 97, Laurel Highlands 81; Penn Trafford (boys) 98, Laurel Highlands 80 – The Penn-Trafford boys and girls had a dominating performance in the pool Thursday night, sweeping a Section 1-AAA meet from visiting Laurel Highlands.
The Penn-Trafford boys defeated the Mustangs, 98-80, while the Lady Warriors beat the Laurel Highlands girls, 97-81.
With the meet secured, the Warriors swam the 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, and 400 freestyle relay in exhibition.
Brandon Thomas had a pair of first-place finishes, winning the 200 freestyle (1:49.06) and 100 butterfly (53.54).
Cameron Lizza (100 backstroke, 1:00.20), Jonathon Lewis (100 breaststroke, 1:09.49), and the 400 freestyle (3:40.83) also finished first.
Lexie Kostelnik won the 500 freestyle in 5:28.68.
Gwyneth Hamilton (100 backstroke, 1:04.92), Britney Galik (100 breaststroke, 1:29.02), and the 400 freestyle relay (3:59.37) all had first-place finishes.

Hempfield (girls) 91, Connellsville 88; Hempfield (boys) 91, Connellsville 78 – The Connellsville swim team had a tough road trip to Hempfield Thursday night, dropping both ends of a boy-girl Section 1-AAA meet.
The Lady Spartans edged Connellsville, 91-88, while the Hempfield boys defeated the Lady Falcons, 91-78.
Connellsville’s Tatum Detwiler won the 50 freestyle (25.31) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.51), and hit the WPIAL qualifying times in both events.
Carlee Shreve (200 freestyle, 2:11.52) and Gracey Fiesta (200 IM, 2:23.66) also had first-place finishes. The 200 medley relay team of Nicole Wood, Detwiler, Fiesta and Shreve second-place time of 1:58.92 also qualified for the WPIAL meet.
Ian McCombie had the lone first-place finish for the Falcons, touching the wall first in the 500 freestyle with a winning time of 5:25.80.
Rifle
West Greene 796-56x, Waynesburg Central 793-49x – The Section 1 rifle match at the Waynesburg Sportsmen’s Association range was close Wednesday afternoon, but West Greene prevailed, defeating Waynesburg Central, 796-56x-793-49x.
The match was scheduled for a couple weeks ago, but was postponed because of snow.
Haleigh Thomas and Zach Abbott led the way for the Pioneers, sharing medalist honors with a score of 100-9x. Shey Watson (100-8x) and Kenzie Thomas (100-7x) were also spot on for West Greene.
Noah Lemley (99-5x), DJ Jones (99-6x), Shane Vliet (99-6x), and Sage Vliet (99-6x) rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers. The scores of Dawn Anna Trout (92-2x) and Ethan Huff (96-2x) did not count.
The Raiders’ Hunter Wasson shared medalist honors with a 100-9x. Emilee Tuttle and Selena Phillips both shot 100-8x. Dylan Crockard (98-3x), Dylan Henkins (99-7x), Cameron Cernuska (99-4x), Tristan Cole (98-5x), and Nick Guess (99-5x) also counted in the final tally.
Abby Ozohonish (97-5x) and Michael Pochron (95-3x) did not count in the final score.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
