Farrell strikes out 18 in Mill Run’s 2-1 victory over Better Edge

Trevor Farrell out-dueled Bobby Finn in Mill Run’s 2-1 victory over Better Edge on Sunday at Mill Run Park in Fayette County Baseball League action.

Farrell had 18 strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter in seven innings. He allowed one earned run on five hits.

Finn allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits in six. He had five strikeouts and walked five. He had two hits at the plate, including a double.

Mill run (9-5) broke a 1-1 tied in the fifth when Cade Warrick walked, Austin Puskar singled and Warrick scored on Kris Firestone’s RBI single. Firestone had two singles.

The home team took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Seth Bruner led off the inning with a single and Warrick reached on an error with nobody out.

Finn recorded two outs but Dakota McWilliams walked and Corey Fogle reached on a free pass to score Bruner with two outs.

Better Edge (8-8) tied the game at 1-1 when Russ Ritenour doubled and scored on Eric Tietrantoni’s RBI single.

Both teams returns to the diamond on Thursday when Mill Run hosts Little Joey’s Pizza and Better Edge hosts Carmichaels. First pitch is both contests is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Legion baseball

Waynesburg 8, Jefferson-Morgan 2 — Waynesburg scored four runs in the third inning and Luke Robinson held down Jefferson-Morgan to earn the win at Waynesburg in Fayette American Legion play.

The home team scored two runs in the fifth inning for a 6-0 lead before Jefferson-Morgan (1-8) got on the scoreboard with two runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-2.

Waynesburg (4-10) added a run in the bottom of the inning and one in the eighth for an 8-2 advantage.

Robinson allowed two hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Waynesburg’s Nicolas Zator was 3 for 4 with three singles and two RBIs. Teammate Ryle Metheny was 2 for 5, including a double, and one RBI.

Hunter Robinson had a two-run single for the home team, and teammate Tyler Rush was 2 for 4 with two base hits and an RBI.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Jake Bissett was 2 for 4 with two singles and teammate Kylar Amos was 2 for 4 with two base hits and an RBI. Eli Rafail was 2 for 5 with two singles and Breenan Kozich had an RBI single for the visitors.

Waynesburg is on the road at John DiVirgilio Field tonight when it plays Belle Vernon.

Smithfield-Fairchance 6, Farmington 3 — Adam Simon hit a tie-breaking two-run double in the eighth inning as Smithfield-Fairchance fended off visiting Farmington.

The hosts jumped out to a 3-0 in the first two innings but Farmington scored single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth to pull even. The tying run came when Jeremy Saliba singled, stole second and scored on Colton Bittner’s double.

Smithfield-Fairchance surged back in front in the bottom of the eighth against losing pitcher Connor DeMoss, who pitched well in defeat. Nate Bricker started the rally with an infield hit, Dylen Over was hit by a pitch and Simon delivered his clutch double to make it 5-3. Simon scored on a throwing error on R.J. Hlatky’s single to center.

Winning pitcher Chandler Goodwin gave up two runs and struck out five in three innings in relief of starter Willie Palmer, who allowed one run with nine strikeouts in six innings.

DeMoss came on in relief of Bittner in the fourth and pitched into the eighth, striking out seven.

Bricker had two hits for S-F (10-3).

Trent Uphold had three hits for Farmington (1-9), and DeMoss contributed two hits, including a double.

Smithfield-Fairchance travels to Jefferson-Morgan for a 6 p.m. game today in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Saturday’s result

Uniontown 12, Belle Vernon 1 — Uniontown kept its perfect record in Fayette American Legion baseball play intact with a victory over Belle Vernon at John DiVirgilio Complex.

Hudson Novak had a perfect game going through four innings for Uniontown (14-0) until Jake Callaway singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Novak picked up the win after allowing one earned run on three hits in seventh innings. He had eight strikeouts and walked one.

The visitors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, and added a run in the third, two in the second, and two in the fifth for a 8-0 advantage. Belle Vernon (4-7) scored one run in the bottom of the fifth when Eric Pietrantoni singled home Callaway.

Uniontown responded with runs in the seventh and eighth to put the Mercy Rule into effect.

Novak had two hits, three RBIs and one run scored, while Troy Kifer, Greg Lancaster, Derek Gaisbauer and Ian Edenfield all doubled for coach Brad Yohman’s team. Kifer had two hits, two RBIs and scored one run. His two-run double in the fifth scored Josh Burns and Lancaster.

Travis Sankovich scored three runs and had an RBI single in the seventh, and Gaisbauer had two hits, two runs scored, two RBIs and three stolen bases.

Edenfield added a base hit and score one run while Burns had two hits, two RBIs and one runs scored. Lancaster had two hits and scored two runs to round out the offense for Uniontown.

Uniontown travels to Wana-B-Park to play Carmichaels (5-7) tonight and Belle Vernon hosts Waynesburg at John DiVirgilio Complex. Both games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
