Smithfield-Fairchance stays hot heading into playoffs

Smithfield-Fairchance finished the regular season in a big way with a 15-2 victory over Jefferson-Morgan on Monday in Fayette American Legion baseball action at Jefferson-Morgan.

Sam Hlatky picked up the win after allowing two earned runs on three hits in 5.1 innings. He had 11 strikeouts and walked one. Austin Bergman and RJ Hlatky came in relief to close out the game.

Devin Stoneking kept Jefferson-Morgan (1-9) in the game, as he allowed four earned runs on six hits in five. He didn’t record a strikeout and walked three.

Smithfield-Fairchance (11-3) held a 4-2 advantage when Stoneking was taken out of the game, and it took advantage with seven runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to put the Mercy Rule into effect.

Steve Angel had a two-run single in the seventh for coach Mike Simon’s team.

Willie Palmer had three RBIs on a single and two sacrifice flyouts for the visitors. Teammate Adam Simon had three hits, including a double, and Colby Uphold stayed hot with three base hits and an RBI.

Nate Bricker had two singles and scored three runs while teammate Chandler Goodwin had three hits, including a double, three runs scored and an RBI.

Zach Gamble had two hits for the home team, including an RBI single, and teammate Hunter Bowen doubled.

Jefferson-Morgan plays Farmington this evening at 6 p.m. with the winner advancing to play Uniontown in the Fayette American Legion playoff tournament.

Smithfield-Fairchance hosts Waynesburg when the tournament begins on Friday.
