CALIFORNIA — The girls division of the J. Budd Grebb Memorial Basketball League picked back up Monday after an off-week with four games.

Dax Thomas State Farm (4-1) picked up a pair of wins with a 57-34 win over Lee Supply (2-2) and a 62-48 win over previously undefeated BV Dairy Queen (3-1).

The two wins put Dax Thomas State Farm in first place.

“The girls played well today considering we had a week off,” Dax Thomas State Farm coach Dan Kovatch. “We got solid senior leadership, especially from Kelsey Green (Belle Vernon Area).

“She made plays and found girls all night long for easy baskets.”

Green set the tone with 14 points and six assists while Maria Claybaugh (Charleroi) led the team with 24 points while Keira Boff (Belle Vernon) led Lee Supply with 15 points.

In Dax Thomas State Farm’s win over BV Dairy Queen, Claybaugh had 21 points, Green had 15 points, and Taylor Kovatch (Belle Vernon) had 10 while Sierra Short (Charleroi) and Olivia Greco (Beth-Center) had 20 and 14 points, respectively.

“They cut our lead down in the second half, but our experience came through,” Dan Kovatch said of his team. “The girls are working well together.”

BV Dairy Queen coach Bill Greco shared his thoughts on the game.

“We cut it down to three points in the second half, but their experience showed and they are a well-coached team,” Greco said. “Some of our kids aren’t used to playing at that pace and we will use this as a learning experience.”

Lee Supply coach Phil Stewart shared his thought about his team which played its two games without its two point guards.

“The girls gave it their all and I am proud of the effort,” he said. “We were then able to bounce back in our second game.”

Lee Supply bounced back with a 56-44 win over Duda Farms (0-5) later in the evening.

Boff led Lee Supply with 27 points while Duda Farms was paced by Kylie Myers (Albert Gallatin), who had 14 points and Hailey Kellerman (Bentworth), who added 11 while Jenna Vito (Bentworth) had 15 rebounds.

AMD Industries (3-1) defeated Cedarbrook (1-4) 35-31 in a low-scoring contest that saw scrappy defense all game long, and the perfect example of the defensive effort was Sarah Stitch, of Cedarbrook, who dove all over the floor for loose balls.

Lindsay Steeber (Belle Vernon) paced a balanced attack by AMD Industries with nine points while Megan Kollock led Cedarbrook with 14 points.

Cedarbrook coach Dennis Stitch shared his thoughts.

“The girls played hard and gave a great defensive effort,” he said. “We almost pulled it out but the girls are getting better.”
