Rain once again washes out Legion tournament game

By Jonathan Guth jguth@heraldstandard.Com 3 min read

Connellsville and Uniontown Legion experienced some déjà vu on Tuesday evening at Hutchinson Field in the Fayette American League baseball tournament.

Both teams were scheduled for a seven-inning game at 6 p.m. but just like Monday, a torrential downpour halted action for the second day in a row.

Connellsville (12-5) will make its third trip in a row to Hutchinson Field tonight for a seven-inning game against Uniontown (26-3) that is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Smithfield-Fairchance (13-4) hosts Colonial 3 (9-8) tonight at Smithfield Ball Field with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. If the field is deemed unplayable, the game could be contested at Rowes Run Field.

“We will do our best to get our field ready to play tomorrow,” Smithfield-Fairchance manager Mike Simon said. “Obviously, a lot of it will depend on how much rain we get tomorrow. It has been tough with all the rain outs but our guys will be ready to play ball.”

The tournament will be halted if Smithfield-Fairchance defeats Colonial 3, and most likely will be completed after all Fayette American Legion teams finish their postseason tournaments. If Colonial 3 beats Smithfield-Fairchance, it will meet the loser of the Connellsville-Uniontown game at 8 p.m. at Hutchinson Field.

“I want to see how the tournament goes tomorrow and we will take it from there,” Uniontown manager and Fayette American League President Brad Yohman said. “If we have to halt the tournament, we will discuss it and determine the bids as a league.

“If we have to finish the tournament after postseason play has been completed, we will do that, and it is not something that we haven’t done before because we need to have the bids in for the regional tournament.”

The Region 6 Tournament is set to begin on Saturday at Hutchinson Field.

Uniontown has automatically qualified as the hosts of the regional, and its first-round opponent will be against the third-place team from Allegheny County on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m.

Connellsville finds itself in good position to qualify for the regional after defeating Smithfield-Fairchance (13-4) on Sunday.

Smithfield-Fairchance bounced back after losing to Connellsville to defeat Belle Vernon.

Colonial 3 defeated Carmichaels in the only game played on Friday before losing to Uniontown on Sunday. It trailed Farmington, 5-0, on Monday before rain washed the game out in the top of the fourth inning. Colonial 3 rallied on Tuesday to defeat Farmington, 6-5.
