Copperheads’ Robinson no-hits Little Joeys again
CARMICHAELS — Hunter Robinson threw a six-inning, no-hitter and Carmichaels took full advantage of its scoring chances en route to a 10-0 victory over Little Joeys Pizza Wednesday night at Carmichaels High School in Fayette County Baseball League action.
Robinson registered eight strikeouts and only allowed one base runner, a two-out walk to Devin Braddock in the sixth inning.
“Hunter’s command was key today,” Carmichaels manager Dickie Krause said. “He threw all three of his pitches for strikes and got ahead of a lot of hitters. He has a lot of poise and was in a good groove. He is 5-1 this season and he has been a great asset for us.”
Last week Robinson also tossed a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Little Joeys Pizza.
The Copperheads (14-2) collected seven hits and made the most out of 10 walks and three hit by pitches.
“We take it game by game,” Krause said. “We don’t care who will play, whether they are 14-0 or 0-14, we have to bring the same intensity every game. We are by no means perfect, and we have to clean some things up.
“Our pitching has carried us this season. We have a lot of quality starters and the guys have been consistent for us. Our offense has been hit or miss this season, but the pitching is the one constant. I think over the last six games we have only allowed two runs.”
After two scoreless innings, Carmichaels got on the scoreboard when J.W. Kayla started the frame with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a hard hit ball by Joel Spishock.
The Copperheads cranked out four runs in the fourth without a hit. Wes Bristor was issued a bases-loaded walk and Austin Clark earned an RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases full.
J.P. Prezybylinski scored off a wild pitch and Kayla lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Bristor later in the inning.
Carmichaels made it 7-0 in the fifth, courtesy of a RBI single by Caleb Dempsey and a run-producing fielder’s choice by Prezybylinski.
The Copperheads evoked the 10-run mercy rule in the sixth inning with three runs. Spishock smashed an RBI single and Joe Havrilak produced a two-run base knock.
Brandon Lawless was tagged with the loss for Little Joeys Pizza (4-11). Lawless went 3 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on three hits with four strikeouts and seven walks.
Aaron Skinner pitched the remainder of the game for LJP.
The Copperheads, who stretched their winning streak to eight games, showcased their speed in the win by stealing seven bases.
“Our depth has been really strong these last couple of weeks,” Krause said. “That is so key for you in this league. We had 18 kids last time out against Belle Vernon and we had a good number today. We have some speed at the top and we took advantage of the match-up today.”
The two squads will meet again on Friday at Brownsville. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
