Davis & Davis, Team Juan only unbeaten teams remaining

By Wiley S. Baucher For The 3 min read

Despite missing two of their leading scorers, Davis & Davis remained the only perfect team in the elementary division in the Grant Street Basketball League Monday night.

Eli Teslovich and Jaiden Tucker poured in 23 points apiece, as Davis & Davis defeated the Grant Street Warriors 53-19. DJ Johnson paced the Warriors with 10.

In a doubleheader, Johnson’s eight points weren’t enough for the Warriors to hold off APEX Cleaning. Bubba Foster led APEX with 12 points and Niyah Havens added 10 points in the 41-19 win.

The middle school game of the night pitted the Truth against the Flying Dutchmen.

The Dutchmen entered the game the only undefeated team left in middle school play. Riding an 18-10 halftime lead, the Truth, led by Jimmy Harim’s 12 points and Lorenzo McFadden’s 12 rebounds, handed the Dutchmen their first setback of the season. The Dutchmen’s Santana Jones led all scorers with 15.

LeMont Thompson’s 23 points helped New Beginning’s Heat take down AJ’s Mounties 69-24. Thompson was on fire from behind the arc, going six for seven from long range. Kole Fullem led the Mounties with nine points.

Fayette’s Finest ran away with their second win in as many games, as they defeated Next Level 44-13. Christina Perkins’ 18 points led the Finest, while Damar Lewis tallied nine in a losing effort.

The Raiders and Mill Street Market squared off in the first high school game of the evening. The Raiders rode Bill DeShields’ 18 points en route to a 57-44 win over Mill Street Market. Mill Street’s Mello Grooms’ 25-point performance led all scorers.

Fayette’s Finest high school team fought off a feisty Gator Squad 70-50. Malik Ramsey and Lamar Fitzgerald combined for 48 of the team’s points, netting 26 and 22, respectively. Enzo Fetsko led the Gators with 20 points.

Squaring off in the final high school game of the night, Ball Out used a 28-22 halftime lead to beat Team Lonigro 55-45. Ball Out’s Jamir Richardson led all scorers with 18, while Joel Lonigro had 13 for Team Lonigro.

All three adult games went wire to wire, beginning with Team Young taking down Team GLOW 62-57. However, in a shocking turn of events, Team Young had to forfeit the game because of an ineligible player.

Under the bright lights of the Grant Street Park, the two late game were nothing short of spectacular.

On Court 1, Big Williy Style, led by Will Diechert’s 28 points, needed an extra period to upset EZ Money 45-40. Big Willy Style held EZ Money scoreless in the overtime period to come from behind for the win.

In the most exciting and fan-involved game of the night, Team Juan and Next Level traded buckets nearly the entire game. After a James Hairston floater gave Team Juan a five-point lead with a little over a minute remaining, Next Level’s London Hoxie used three moves to gain the inch of space he needed to nail a fade-away, 35-foot 3-pointer to pull Next Level within two. On the ensuing fast break, Team Juan’s Jajuan Davis, lurking in the corner, took a pass from CJ Gaddis and whipped it behind his back to an open Hairston under the hoop that seemingly sealed the deal for Team Juan. The play sent the crowd of about 400 into a frenzy. Team Juan held on for the 68-65 win, paced by Hairston’s 18 points and Gaddis’ 13 assists. Hoxie led all scorers with 25 in the losing effort.
