Linden Hall welcomes Drive for the Cure

By Bill Hughes for The 3 min read

The 3rd annual Drive for the Cure golf scramble and dinner takes place on Saturday, Aug. 12 and the event is looking to grow off of last year’s successful sellout which benefits The Cure Starts Now.

The outing, which takes place at Linden Hall in Dawson, is in honor of the late Alyson Usher who passed away at the age of six in 2012 due to a brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Giloma (DIPG) which is 100 percent fatal upon diagnosis.

Considered one of the rarer conditions, DIPG is diagnosed in between 300-350 children per year and it inhibits all mobility, the ability to speak or swallow, and eventually paralyses breathing and the survival post-diagnosis only ranges from six to nine months.

The shotgun golf start is at 10 a.m. while the dinner and auction begins at 3 p.m.

The event is put on by Alyson’s parents, Nick Usher and Alyssa Hawranko.

“We are ahead of pace compared to where we were last year,” Usher said. “There are still a few openings for golf spots.

“The dinner option is available as well, and it really is outstanding of how well it is going.”

Registration costs include $100 per golfer or $400 for a team of four and this includes dinner and auction.

There is also a dinner and auction option for $35.

“At this point in time, we are on pace to have another sellout and we appreciate it,” Usher said. “Our purpose is to help fund pediatric cancer research, specifically in the brain.”

Usher shared that Linden Hall is providing them with a bigger venue this year which will allow more people to attend the dinner.

“Last year, they gave us the ballroom which holds 200 people and we actually had more than that,” he said. “This year, we are in an outdoor wedding tent and it holds about 300 people.

“Even once the golf slots are sold out, there will be room for the dinner and auction which includes sports packages, hotel options, food packages, and more.”

The Cure Starts Now (CSN) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization started by Keith and Brooke Desserich after the loss of their daughter to brain cancer.

CSN provides funding of experimental treatments and research at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

To date, they have funded $7.3 million in research.
