Eight-run second carries Connellsville Legion past Farmington

Connellsville used an eight-run second inning en route to a 15-7 victory over Farmington on Wednesday night in Fayette American Legion baseball play at Thomas E. Sankovich Field.

The game was called in the sixth inning due to darkness.

Connellsville (2-0) drew four walks in the second and Tanner Orndorff laid down a squeeze bunt that scored a run before Nolan Porterfield capped off the inning with a two-run double. Porterfield had three RBIs, two hits and scored two runs.

Connellsville’s Cory Fogle had two home runs with a two-run shot in the third and a solo blast in the fifth. Fogle had three RBIs, two hits and scored three runs.

The home team scored three runs in the third, followed by one in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth. Farmington scored two runs in the top of the first, and kept in the game with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Connellsville had 16 hits and left 11 runners on base, while Farmington had nine hits and left nine runners on base but committed four errors.

Brody Bonadio had two hits, including a double, and scored three runs for Connellsville. Teammate Kade Warrick had two hits, including a double, with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Marc Prinkey doubled for the home team, and teammate Jake Frick scored two runs and singled.

Connor DeMoss and Alan Vansickle doubled for Farmington (1-1).

Shawn Smith picked up the win on the mound with five strikeouts and six walks. Tyler Frey had two strikeouts and walked four in taking the loss.

Connellsville travels to Hutchinson Field on Saturday to play rival Uniontown. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Uniontown 12, Belle Vernon 0 — Hudson Novak fired a no-hitter to lead Uniontown Legion to a 12-0 victory over Belle Vernon on Wednesday in Fayette American League baseball action at Hutchinson Field.

The LaRoche College product didn’t allowing a hit in six innings of work, as the game was called due to the 12-run Mercy Rule. Novak had 10 strikeouts and walked three.

The incoming freshman for the Redhawks also doubled for Uniontown (4-0).

The home team benefitted from three home runs with Zach Uhazie hitting a two-run homer in the first inning, Derek Gaisbauer adding a two-run shot in the second and Evan Voyten smashing a solo blast in the sixth.

Teammate Travis Sankovich was 2 for 2 with a double, single, two walks, one RBI and one run scored. Ian Edenfield had two doubles and Troy Kifer also doubled for the home team.

Greg Lancaster scored the 12th run in the sixth when Lucas Boyle was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Uniontown returns to the diamond on Saturday when it meets rival Connellsville (2-0) at Hutchinson Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Smithfield-Fairchance 8, Waynesburg 4 — Smithfield-Fairchance scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to pick up a victory over Waynesburg at Smithfield Ball Field.

Smithfield-Fairchance (1-1) broke a 3-3 tie with its five runs in the fifth. Waynesburg (0-3) scored a run in the top of the sixth but couldn’t rally in the seven-inning game that was called due to darkness.

Adam Simon walked in the fifth, Jace Cappellini singled and Dylen Over reached on an error with two outs to score Simon for the 4-3 advantage.

Darion Palmer’s two-run double scored Over and Cappellini for a 6-3 lead and Steve Angel’s RBI single plated Palmer. Sam Hlatky’s double scored Angel for Smithfield-Fairchance’s eighth run.

Palmer had two doubles and two RBIs, teammate Nate Bricker had a two-run double and Simon scored twice for the home team.

Ryley Metheny doubled for Waynesburg, and teammate Hunter Robinson had two hits and three RBIs.

Willie Palmer went 5.1 innings in picking up the win on the mound. He had eight strikeouts and walked four after giving up three runs in the second. Chandler Goodwin finished the last 1.2 innings on the mound for Smithfield-Fairchance.

Smithfield-Fairchance returns to action on June 7 when it plays Belle Vernon (0-1) at John DiVirgilio Field at 6 p.m.

Carmichaels 10, Colonial 3 (6) — Carmichaels rallied past Colonial 3 to win its opener at Rowes Run.

Carmichaels (1-0) scored the first run but allowed one in the second and three in the fourth to trail, 4-1, before seven in the fifth to take an 8-4 advantage.

The visitors pushed the lead to 10-4 in the top of the seventh. Colonial 3 (0-1) scored two in the bottom of the inning but couldn’t plate the game-tying run.

Carmichaels’ Joel Spischock was 2 for 3 with a grand slam and Colonial’s D.J. Zimcosky was 4 for 5 with a two-run homer.

Dylan Rush, Collin Reynolds and Lane Zekir also doubled for the visitors. Zekir was 2 for 4.

Matthew Barrish had five strikeouts and walked four in earning the pitching victory.

Zekir pitched the last three innings for Carmichaels, who returns to the diamond on Monday at Belle Vernon’s John DiVirgilio Field. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
