Success followed Nedrow throughout career
It seems no matter where he has gone or what he has done, success has followed Scott Nedrow, and thanks to his career, he is a Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame inductee for the Class of 2017.
“Being selected and being a part of sports royalty in this area is an amazing accomplishment for me,” he said. “The type of people that are in it from over the years is an amazing group of athletes.
“I am humbled and honored to be a part of it.”
After transferring to Ringgold from Mon Valley Catholic after ninth grade, Nedrow helped the Rams win the 1973 WPIAL basketball championship. He started as a junior with Mel Boyd, Art Coleman, and two players who would ultimately be drafted into the NBA, Ulice Payne and Tim Stokes.
However, the team lost in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh.
As a senior, Nedrow started with Boyd, Payne, Mike Brantley and MMVASHOF inductee and NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana.
All five of them, as well as sixth man Don Miller, would earn Division I scholarships in varying sports.
“We knew that we were something special as the year developed, but we didn’t realize the overall talent,” Nedrow said. “As history is written, that group of people were some amazing individuals and not just in athletics, but in advanced degrees.
“Add in the fact that you had a coach who put players in a system that allowed us to play with skill, IQ, and confidence.”
The Rams, led by coach Fran LaMendola, won the WPIAL championship by downing General Braddock before falling to them in the PIAA semifinals.
After his senior season, Nedrow was selected All-Section first team, All-State honorable mention, and played in the Roundball Classic at the Civic Arena.
Nedrow continued his career at Pitt, choosing the Panthers over Duquesne, Wake Forest, Villanova, and William & Mary.
Although Nedrow did not play much as a freshman, the team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight where they lost to North Carolina, the eventual national champions.
Nedrow took a redshirt year the following season, but when he returned to action he got key minutes and was entered into the starting lineup halfway through the season.
Elected a co-captain his senior year, he won the university’s Blue-Gold Award as the top scholar-athlete and was nominated for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship for study at Oxford University in England.
After receiving his Master’s from Emory University and working in finance for many years in places such as New York City, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and London, Nedrow has returned home to the area.
Nedrow has one son, William.
