Long ball dooms Laurel Highlands in Section 2-AAAAA softball setback

Laurel Highlands had 22 hits but McKeesport hit four home runs in a 15-11 Section 2-AAAAA victory on Thursday in softball action at Laurel Highlands.

McKeesport (1-1) hit a grand slam in the first inning, a three-run shot, a two-run homer and a solo blast that accounted for 10 of its runs.

LH (0-1, 1-3) found itself down 8-0 after the second, but didn’t go away in scoring runs in every inning but the first. The Lady Tigers held an 11-7 lead after six, but scored four in the seventh for a 15-7 advantage.

The Mustangs scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Mercedes Sickles, Hailee Rusko, Lauren Sperry and Amanda Glusica doubled for Laurel Highlands. Teammate Jenna Bliss was 5-for-5 with three RBIs and Sperry was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

The Mustangs’ Hailee Rusko was 3-for-4 with an RBI and walk. Teammate Allison Lowery was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and stolen base.

Laurel Highlands returns to action on Saturday when it plays University, West Virginia, at Mylan Park on the campus of West Virginia University. The first pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
