Lady Bearcats blank Monessen, 3-0
Bentworth 3, Monessen 0 – Rori Schreiber broke though Monessen’s backline and scored the game winner with 26 minutes remaining in Bentworth’s 3-0 Section 1-A victory on Wednesday afternoon at Monessen High School’s Stadium in girls’ soccer play.
“I am proud of Rori, who has struggled to score in the last couple of games,” Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra said. “Monessen is a tough place to play but we played well.”
The Lady Bearcats (7-1-1, 8-3-1) move into second place in the section standings behind Seton LaSalle (7-1, 9-2). The Lady Rebels defeated Bentworth, 1-0, on Sept. 27, but Hamstra’s team won the first meeting (3-1) on Sept. 6. Seton LaSalle hosts Beth-Center (2-4-1, 2-5-1) tonight at 6 p.m.
Third-place Bishop Canevin (6-1-1, 7-2-1) travels to play the Lady Bearcats on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Lady Greyhounds (1-6-1, 3-7-1) played their backline on their own 20 with eight behind the ball. The Lady Bearcats had their chances in the first half, but Monessen’s all-section keeper Destiny Habeck kept the visitors off the board.
“You have to give Monessen credit for being disciplined,” Hamstra said. “Beating two blocks of four is difficult. Their goalkeeper really kept them in the game in the first half. I told the girls at halftime that someone was going to have to break the backline with some individual skill.”
Play opened up following Schreiber’s tally, and Paige Marshalek and Jocelyn Timlin added goals for a 3-0 lead. Timlin has 51 career goals and Marshalek 45. Goalkeeper Cande Kossel earned the clean sheet.
Monessen looks to get back on track on Saturday when it travels to Chartiers-Houston (2-5-1, 3-9-1) for a Section 1-A match at noon.
