Leopards beat AG, clinch second place
Belle Vernon 9, Albert Gallatin 2 – Albert Gallatin put in the first goal of the match but Belle Vernon quickly regrouped and went on to a 9-2 victory over the host Colonials in Section 3-AAA boys soccer action on Tuesday night.
Markello Apodiakos tied the Leopards’ single-game record with five goals as Belle Vernon (11-3-1, 7-2-1) clinched second place. Apodiakos also tied the team single-season record with his 31st goal.
Adam Simon scored off an assist from Mark Flecker to give AG (2-11-1, 1-9) a surprising 1-0 lead, but Belle Vernon answered with the next four goals to take a 4-1 halftime advantage. The Leps out-scored the Colonials 5-1 in the second half.
Aaron Brown tallied three goals for Belle Vernon and Nick Nagy accounted for the Leps’ other goal. Goalkeeper T.J. Watson made three saves to earn his first varsity win.
Simon scored twice for Albert Gallatin, the second coming off a corner kick by Nate Sutton late in the second half, to give him seven goals on the season.
The Colonials will hold senior night when the host McKeesport next Wednesday in a non-section match.
