Falcons can’t corral Mustangs in 48-12 loss
CONNELLSVILLE — Connellsville took another tough loss Friday night, losing to visiting Plum on the Falcons’ Senior Night, 48-12.
It was the same story for the Falcons as mistakes, such as bad snaps, missed tackles and interceptions, played a role in taking away any momentum. The Mustangs were able to turn two of those interceptions into touchdowns.
“We talked to the guys about getting off to slow starts, but tonight we did the opposite and got up on Plum early,” Connellsville’s Marko Thomas said. “We capitalized on their mistake early and made a nice drive. Defensively, I don’t think we played badly, but offensively we had five turnovers that really hurt us.”
The Falcons (0-6, 1-7) took advantage of a Plum mistake early by forcing a fumble and recovering at their own 39. The Falcons drove the length of the field with Dylan Bubarth scoring on a 6-yard run for a 6-0 lead after the two-point conversion failed.
The Mustangs (3-4, 3-5) came back on their next possession, taking over at their 38 after a short kick. They finished the 62-yard drive with Coulter Robb scoring the first of his three touchdowns on an 8-yard run. Robb finished the night rushing for 96 yards on 18 carries.
Plum took one play to score on its next possession from the Falcons’ 38 after a short punt when Tony Little, who passed for 124 yards, connected with Dominic Carlisano on a 38-yard scoring toss to take a 14-6 lead after one quarter.
The Falcons took over at their 20 to open the second quarter. Bubarth’s pass sailed high and Robb made the pick, returning the interception for the score to increase the Mustangs lead to 21-6.
Plum followed with three more scores before the half. Dakota Sunday scored on a 2-yard run, Hunter Field returned another Bubarth interception 31 yards for a touchdown, and Robb scored his third touchdown of the night on a 5-yard run, giving the Mustangs a 41-6 halftime lead.
“We can’t expect to win when you turn the ball over like we did tonight,” Thomas said. “It’s not like the kids are not trying. These are effort mistakes. I tell the kids if you’re going to make a mistake, make it going at 100 percent.”
The Mercy Rule took affect with Plum holding a 35-point lead heading into the second half.
After a scoreless third quarter, Plum tacked on one more score on a 1-yard run by Lawrence Scufuri. The Falcons managed to fight back for one more score behind the play of Lucas White. The Falcons took the ensuing kickoff at their 45. White ripped on a 52-yard to the 6-yard line, and went around the left end on the next play for the score.
“We got two weeks left so we’ve got to keep the kids heads up and keep them motivated,” Thomas said. “There is a lot to build on. the younger kids are getting use to what we’re trying to do and are becoming more comfortable. It’s going to take a little time, but we’re doing everything we can to finish the season on a positive note.”
