Friend wins PSAC cross country title

California (Pa.) redshirt senior and Uniontown graduate Julie Friend won the PSAC women’s cross country championship title Saturday by nearly a minute over Edinboro’s Stefanie Parsons.

Friend crossed the finish line on the Vulcans’ home course in 22:07.8. Parsons was second in 23:04.5.

Edinboro edged Shippensburg, 87-89, for the women’s team title. The California women finished fifth with 160 points.

Summer Hill finished 15th for the Vulcans with a time of 23:42.1. Alyson Pierce (26, 24:11.5), Jaclyn Reinbold (58, 25:27.6), Shae Grinnell (61, 25:34.1), Megan Bateman (63, 25:34.7), and Uniontown grad Katie Burgess (75, 25:50.5) rounded out the Vulcans’ top-7 finishers.

Seton Hill’s Jade Bellotti, another Uniontown grad, finished 65th overall with a time of 25:41.3.

The Fighting Scots’ Austin Pondel won the men’s title in 26:27.9.

Shippensburg was the men’s team champion with 38 points, easily outdistancing Edinboro’s 57 points.

The California men finished 13th overall with 334 points. Brett George was the first Vulcan to finish, placing 19th in a time of 28:01.5.

Women’s soccer

Washington & Jefferson 1, Westminster 0 — Mount Pleasant graduate Jordan Toohey scored the lone goal of the game in the 11th minute to lift the Presidents to a PAC home victory.

Toohey converted a corner kick from Josie Madden, an Elizabeth Forward graduate, into a shot the deflected into the net off the near post.

W&J improves to 5-2 in the PAC and 10-5-1, while Westminster goes to 5-2 in the conference and 10-6 overall.
