Mustangs romp over Tigers, 15-0

Laurel Highlands romped over visiting McKeesport, 15-0 in three innings, in the Section 3-AAAAA baseball opening for both teams on Thursday.

Winning pitcher Mason McManus allowed just one base runner on a walk in tossing an abbreviated no-hitter, and hit a double.

Ian Edenfield and Nate Zimcosky also doubled for LH, and Craig Lancaster singled twice.

Alex Dalton took the loss.

The Mustangs (1-0, 1-0) scored five runs in the first and 10 in the second to invoke the 15-run mercy rule after retiring the Tigers (0-2, 0-1) in the top of the third.

LH hosts Franklin Regional in another section contest Friday at 4 p.m.

Jefferson-Morgan 10, Geibel Catholic 0 – Jake Broadwater and Bryce Bedilion combined on a three-hit shutout as Jefferson-Morgan opened defense of its Section 2-A baseball title with a 10-0 win over visiting Geibel Catholic in five innings on Thursday.

Broadwater struck out 10 and walked four in four innings to earn the win.

Bedilion finished up with a scoreless fifth, had three hits and scored the game-ending run when he came home on Zack Gamble’s double in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the mercy rule.

Gamble and Cole Tretnik each had two hits for the Rockerts (2-0, 1-0). Justin Maddich and Logan Rhodes both doubled.

Jesse Yourich took the loss for the Gators.

Softball

Thomas Jefferson 7, Connellsville 1 – Thomas Jefferson exploded for seven runs in the late innings to overtake Connellsville, 7-1, in a Section 2-AAAAA softball game Thursday afternoon.

Mia Burd held the Lady Jaguars off the board until the bottom of the fifth when winning pitcher Bella Bucy hit a two-run homer to key a three-run inning for a 3-1 lead.

TJ (1-0, 1-0) added four insurance runs in the sixth.

Kylee Yothers had two of the Lady Falcons’ (0-3, 0-2) three hits.

Waynesburg Central 11, Brownsville 6 – Bailee Shimek blasted a three-run homer and Paige Rutan hit a solo shot as Waynesburg Central defeated visiting Brownsville, 11-6, in a Section 3-AAA softball game on Thursday.

Erin Fitch doubled for the Lady Raiders (3-1, 1-0), who had 11 hits. Shimek, Rutan and Fitch each had two hits as did Rachel Elsenheimer and winning pitcher Jordan Sibert.

Sibert struck out four and walked two.

Losing pitcher Payton Hall struck out five and walked three. Savannah Urban had two hits for the Lady Falcons (0-1, 1-3).
