Local athletes have solid invitational performances

Local track & field athletes had a busy weekend, participating in several invitationals around western Pennsylvania, and many had solid, medal-winning performances.

The Lady Spartan/Wildcat Invitational, at Latrobe Memorial Stadium, and Cal U Track Carnival were held Friday under warm, sunny skies.

The Falcons’ Cameron Sapola won the javelin with a throw of 164-9. Teammate Jake Reilly improved in the finals of the shot put, finishing third with a throw of 133-10. Aiden Bruich was sixth in the shot put (46-6) and Chris Smiley was seventh (45-7½). Logan Gonzales just finished outside of the top eight in the 1,600, completing the four-lap race in 4:47.1.

George Trimbath, Dom Prestipino, Kyle Jordan and Gonzales placed sixth in the 3,200 relay in 8:36, as did Bodee Stonebreaker, Trimbath, Prestipino and Gonzales in the 1,600 (3:37).

Connellsville’s Rachael Grimm finished second in the 400 at Latrobe with a time of 1:02.64. Teammate Emma Bennington was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 102-9.

Mount Pleasant’s Maddy Lorince finished third in the javelin with a throw of 109-2.

Uniontown’s Abby Marinucci placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 34-6¾, while Maeve Carei finished second in the pole vault after clearing 9-6.

The Red Raiders’ Reginald Grooms placed ninth in the finals of the 100 with a time of 11.96 seconds, after placing sixth in the prelims. Grooms finished seventh in the 200 (23.82). Isaiah Melvin was second in the 300 intermediate hurdles (40.79) and ninth in the high jump (5-8). Jayden Thomas placed fourth in the high jump (5-10).

Uniontown’s David Eitner was second in the prelims of the javelin and held the spot in the finals with a throw of 160-58.

Yough throwers Julia Milcoff (5, discus, 100-5) and Levi Heltebran (4, shot put, 47-2) placed in the top eight.

Frazier’s Skye Eicher showed her speed at Cal U by winning the 200 (26.67) and finishing second in the 100 (13.08). Teammate Jovanna Isaac was eighth in the 100 (13.96). Kendall Shaporka was fifth in the 400 (1:07.93). McKenzie Miller placed seventh in the 800 (3:01.45). Isabella Kudyba was seventh in the 1,600 (7:00.18) and fifth in the 3,200 (15:43.55). Kaelyn Shaporka was eighth in the 300 intermediate hurdles (55.93).

Khristyne Barch won the high jump after clearing 4-10, as well as the javelin with a throw of 111-2.

The Lady Commodores also placed in all three relays.

Beth-Center’s Sydney Urbine was fifth in the 200 (28.04), fourth in the 400 (1:06.31), and sixth in the 100 (13.91). Teammate Kinlee Whited was seventh in the 200 with a time of 29.98 and second in the 300 intermediate hurdles (52.28). Mikayla Kanalis was eighth in the shot put (27-4¾) and tied for eighth in the discus (72-4). Kennedy Kuhns finished second in the javelin with a throw of 109-4.

Southmoreland’s Kaylee Farino won the 800 (2:37.81) and was third in the 1,600 (5:58.16).

Madison Cowan (6, 100 high hurdles, 18.11; 4, long jump, 15-3), Larissa Lombardo (6, 300 intermediate hurdles, 54.38), Amelia Echard (3, high jump, 4-6; 7, triple jump, 29-6), Marissa Hribal (6, shot put, 27-11¾; 7, discus, 74-3), Genesis Harshell (7, shot put, 27-6½), Brooke Corley (3, javelin, 106-10), Ashley Matheney (7, javelin, 88-9), and 400 relay (3, 55.09) all placed in the top eight.

Albert Gallatin’s Abby King and Janelle Johnson tied for fourth in the high jump (4-2) and Riley Steeber was fifth in the long jump (15-½). Odessa Hillard was sixth in the javelin (100-9).

The Scotties’ Ronnie Robinson finished second in the 100 in 11.43 seconds, with teammate Austin Gemas eighth in 11.88 seconds. Austin Keyser cleared 5-10 to win the high jump. Chase Calhoun was second in the shot put (41-4½). Chad Miller (8, 800, 2:18.81), Jake Vanorsdale (8, 110 high hurdles, 18.96), 400 relay (3, 45.26), 3,200 relay (4, 9:19.74), and Ray Hribal (3, shot put, 41-1¼; 5, discus, 123-9; 7, javelin, 128-6) also placed for Southmoreland.

The Commodores’ Kenny Fine was seventh in the 200 (24.61). Ryan Balentine won the 300 intermediate hurdles (44.53) and was seventh in the 110 high hurdles (18.87). Jullian Muccioli won the long jump (20-7), while Vinny Muccioli was third in the triple jump (38-8½). Greg Lynch was sixth in the shot put (38-4). The 400 relay (5, 47.03) and 1,600 relay (3:49.77) also place.

The Bulldogs’ Dominic Clutter placed eighth in the 400 (58.50). Michael Berdar was third in the high jump (5-8). Ronald White won the discus (145-1) and placed fourth in the shot put (39-5¼). Anthony Herman was seventh (37-3) and Dalton White eighth (36-1¾) in the shot put. Jordan Blackburn was fourth in the discus (131-0) and teammate Dalton White was seventh (112-4). Herman was second in the javelin with a throw of 144-4, while Blackburn was eighth (125-1).

California’s Charles Roberts was third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:57.46.

Several teams participated at the TSTCA Invitational held Saturday at West Mifflin, including Belle Vernon.

The Leopards’ had top-eight performances from Hunter Martin (3, 110 high hurdles, 15.31; 5, long jump, 20-8; 4, triple jump, 43-3), the 3,200 relay team of Isaac Evans, Jake Sepesky, Reid Bagiatis and Brett Seich (4, 8:33), and Ryan Marek (6, discus, 121-4).

The Lady Leopards’ Grace Henderson (6, 1,600, 5:31; 3, high jump, 4-11), the 3,200 relay team of Kaitlyn Keegan, Taylor Kovatch, Kaitlyn Melvina and Henderson (5th), and Ezra Johnson (3, discus, 114-0).

Belle Vernon was also in attendance at the Monessen Invitational. Both the boys and girls teams finished second in the team standings.

Mason Pascoe (3, 100), Ty Robertson (5, 100; 3, 300 intermediate hurdles), Nick Smarachek (6, 100; 6, 200), Dane Anden (3, 200; 2 long jump; 2, high jump), Maverick Selvoski (6, 400; 3, high jump), Cam Miller (6, 1,600), Austin Martin (4, 300 intermediate hurdles; 5, triple jump), Dave Shernisky (6, 300 intermediate hurdles), boys 400 relay (1st), 1,600 relay (2nd), 3,200 relay (2nd), Collin Pallotta (2, shot put;; 2, discus), Hayden Baron (3, shot put; 2, javelin), Jesse Herron (5, javelin; 6 discus) all had top-6 finishes for the Leopards.

Morgan Coccari (1, 100; 4, 200), Madison Schmeltz (3, 100; 3, 200), Jillian Kurta (4, 100), Lindsay Steeber (5, 400; 4, long jump), Hannah Zeffiro (6, 800; 1, high jump), Emma Sabolek (2, 100 high hurdles; 1, 300 intermediate hurdles), Sarah Bury (4, 300 intermediate hurdles), Emma Shrader (3, 300 intermediate hurdles), 400 relay (1st), 1,600 relay (2nd), 3,200 relay (2nd), Kaitlyn Hrycko (6, long jump; 2, high jump), Anna Woosley (1, shot put; 3, discus), Sara Sanner (3, shot put), Lauren Slagus (4, shot put; 3, javelin), Alexa Murphy (1, discus) had top finishes for the Belle Vernon girls.
