Greyhounds sweep Gators, solidify hold on third place
Monessen 11, Geibel Catholic 0; Monessen 12, Geibel Catholic 2 – Monessen solidified its hold on fourth place with a doubleheader sweep at Geibel Catholic, 11-0 and 12-2, both in five innings, in Section 2-A baseball action on Thursday.
Nick Baker pitched a one-hitter in the opener for the Greyhounds (6-4, 5-3), striking out nine and walking one, and drove in three runs with a double and a single.
Hannah Geary broke up Baker’s no-hit bid with a fifth-inning single for the Gators (0-9, 0-8).
Cam Frolo had three hits, three runs and on RBI for Monessen. Cory Fleming added two hits, a run and two RBIs, and Zach Evans also had two hits and scored once.
Losing pitcher Jesse Yourish struck out four and allowed 13 hits, two walks and three hit batters in going the distance.
Monessen led 1-0 before scoring six runs in the third to take control.
Frolo earned the win in the second game, allowing two runs on one hit, three walks and one hit batter in 4 1/3 innings, and helped his own cause with two hits, three runs and one RBI.
Vincenzo Rhome recorded the final two outs on the mound, and also had two hits, three runs and an RBI.
Enzo Fetsko doubled in the first inning for the Gators’ lone hit and the only extra-base hit of the game.
Nate Lynch had two hits and two runs for the Greyhounds, and Baker contributed two hits, two RBIs and one run.
The game was scoreless entering the bottom of the third when Monessen, playing as the home team in the nightcap, scored six runs, then added three in the fourth and three more in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule.
Losing pitcher Jake Mariotti tossed a complete game, allowing 11 hits, five walks and three hit batters with two strikeouts.
