Friend, Means lauded
California University of Pa. track stars Julie Friend and Jae’Len Means were honored by the PSAC as Track Athletes of the Week.
Friend, a senior from Uniontown, broke the 3,000-meter steeplechase PSAC record Saturday at the Penn Relays last Thursday. Friend finished sixth overall with a time of 10:19.12. Her time automatically qualified her for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Champioships and broke her school record by over six seconds.
Friend’s time is the sixth-fastest in Division II this year. She is the only female athlete in the PSAC to hit an automatic qualifying mark. Friend has also provisionally qualified in the 800 and 10,000 meters.
The conference mark was set by Shippensburg’s Molly Dell back in 2010.
Means, a junior from Gateway, broke his school mark in the 100-meter dash Saturday at the 14th annual Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg, finishing his preliminary heat in 10.55 seconds. He then went lower when he won the dash in 10.52, .40 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
He returned to the track to win the 200 in 21.48 seconds.
Means has reached the provisional time for the NCAA Championships in both the 100 and 200.
