Multiple Threat: Brudnock does is all for Pioneers

Greene County has produced a number of talented tailbacks over the last decade, and usually when you think of that area you think of hard-nosed rushers.

In the western side of the county, there’s a receiver that is turning heads and breaking the mold as a viable option in the passing game.

West Greene senior wide receiver Nathan Brudnock goes into his final year with solid career numbers and is looking to up his game in the Pioneers’ air attack.

“Nathan is just a special athlete,” fourth-year coach Rodney Huffman said. “I think he is capable of playing somewhere in the fall next season. I think he will decide his future when he gets there. He is a very intelligent kid and runs his routes very well.”

Last season the 6-foot-1, 170-pound receiver hauled in a team-high 23 balls for 380 yards and six total touchdowns, as West Greene posted a 7-4 record and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since the early 1990s.

In 2017, West Greene amassed over 324 points and averaged 29.5 points per game.

“You always have to take in account where Nathan lined up at for us,” Huffman said. “He has a lot of speed and can make the big plays. He got a lot of double teams, which opened up our running game. Defenses couldn’t put 10 in the box because Nathan was outside.”

Huffman also said that you can expect West Greene to shift Brudnock around when he’s out there this season.

“We are going to move him a lot this year,” he said. “He is usually our X-receiver, but he is going to see some time in the slot. He has a quick first step and excellent hands to handle all that traffic in the middle of the field. We might even give him some carries and use him as our wildcat quarterback.”

Brudnock also has had a stellar career in the winter on the basketball court the last three years, as the versatile guard is closing in on 1,000 career points at West Greene.

“He is an excellent basketball player, too,” Huffman said. “He has great ball skills and just has an unbelievable motor. He stays in shape year round. I know he plays in a couple different AAU and summer leagues. He is always active and he has improved in all areas since he was a freshman.”

West Greene should be once again potent on offense this year in the Tri-County South Conference, as Brudnock will be joined by an experienced offensive line and other playmakers like junior running back Benjamin Jackson, junior fullback Andrew Litton and junior quarterback Gavin Scott.

Besides being a threat on the offensive end, Huffman likes Brudnock’s skills on defense, too.

“He is our shutdown corner on defense,” Huffman said. “He is very aggressive and has very good instincts on how to diagnose coverages and the other team’s passing concepts. His hand strength is solid and he is just the total package.”

The Pioneers start play in Week Zero on Friday when they head to West Virginia to play cross-state rival Cameron.
