The Connellsville girls took to the golf course for the first time in the program’s history Thursday afternoon, and the Lady Falcons returned home from Murrysville Golf Club with a 178-259 loss in Section 3-AAA action to Franklin Regional.

Shelby Soberdash posted the low score for Connellsville with a 59. Liz Landman shot 64, one stroke lower than Trisha Poorbaugh. Courtney Layman’s 71 closed out the scoring. Victoria Bittner’s 83 was not used.

Ken House returns to coaching golf after a nearly-decade long stint as the Connellsville boys coach that ended 13 years ago.

“It was first varsity match for all the girls,” explained House. “What I like is their enthusiasm. They want to learn.”

The squad was disappointed with their score, but House buoyed the loss with expectations of improvement.

“It was a humbling experience. We have four girls who lettered last year in a limited role,” said House. “It’s a growing experience, by the end of the season the scores will be lower. They’re learning golf etiquette and we’ll go from there.”

As for House returning to coaching, he added, “I love this game. I want to pass it on.”

The Lady Falcons travel to Irwin Country Club next Tuesday to face Penn-Trafford. Connellsville hosts its first section match on Thursday, Aug. 30, when the Lady Falcons host Gateway.

The Lady Panthers’ Baylee Horvath was medalist with a 5-over 41. Caroline Tragesser (42), Lila Shilling (44), and Hailey Politano (51) also counted in the final tally. Payton Shilling’s 55 was not used.
