Strong start carries Pioneers past Avella

West Greene 48, Avella 38 – West Greene benefited from a strong first quarter in a 48-38 Section 2-A victory over Avella on Tuesday at West Greene High School.

The Pioneers (2-1, 4-7) held a 15-4 advantage after the first, and extended its lead to 27-14 at halftime following a 12-10 edge in the second.

The Eagles (0-3, 0-9) outscored West Greene, 12-11, in the third, and 12-10 in the fourth to cut into the deficit.

The Pioneers’ Nathan Brudnock led all scorers with 15 points. Teammate Gavin Scott added 10.

Avella’s Zach Cannon made four 3-pointers for 12 points.

West Greene hosts Waynesburg Central (0-5, 2-9) on Thursday at 7 p.m. in non-section play.
