Belle Vernon Legion clinches first-round home game

Belle Vernon was held scoreless on just one hit through six innings Thursday night, but the home team erupted in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a 6-5 victory over Colonial 3 in Fayette American Legion Baseball League action.

Belle Vernon clinched third place and an opening round home game with a 9-5 record. Despite the loss, Colonial 3 has all but secured fourth place with a record of 8-7.

The double-elimination playoffs are scheduled to begin on Sunday.

Brandon Swaney allowed only Tyler Seliga’s single in the bottom of the fourth inning until Belle Vernon swatted four singles in the bottom of the seventh.

Logan Seliga started the inning on the only error committed by Colonial in the game. Tyler Seliga and Josh Hoffman walked to load the bases.

JJ Hartman singled home Logan Seliga. Joe Sabolek, who started the game for Belle Vernon, singled home Tyler Seliga and Josh Hoffman.

Jake Rathway walked to load the bases and then Hartman scored on a wild pitch.

After a strikeout, Garrett Greco singled home Sabolek and Rathway moved to third. After another strikeout, Eric Pietrantoni’s RBI single plated Rathway with the winning run.

Colonial 3 scored once in the top of the first inning and three more in the top of the second with all the runs unearned on five errors.

Colonial increased its lead to 5-0 with a solo run in the top of the fifth inning.

Trevor Schrock worked the final three innings to earn the win. He allowed one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Connellsville 8, Farmington 1 — Connellsville completed the game that was suspended Tuesday because of weather, clinching second place with the victory.

Connellsville improves to 13-2, while Farmington goes to 6-6.

Connellsville scored two in the top of the second inning and extended its advantage to 5-0 in the top of the third. The visitors added single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

Farmington scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Jake Ansell started and went five innings for the win, striking out five. Austin Petraglia pitched the final two innings, recording all six outs by strikeout.

Brody Bonadio doubled and DJ Farkas legged out a triple for Connellsville.

Kaine Frye had a double and single for Farmington.

Smithfield-Fairchance 5, Jefferson-Morgan 1 — Smithfield-Fairchance moved into the lead in the bottom of the first inning and Jace Cappellini went the distance to make the advantage stand.

Smithfield-Fairchance evens its record at 7-7. Jefferson-Morgan goes to 4-10.

Smithfield-Fairchance scored once in the bottom of the first inning, but Jefferson-Morgan tied the game in the top of the second.

The home team regained the lead in the bottom of the second inning with two runs. Smithfield-Fairchance added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Cappelline tossed a one-hitter, allowing one unearned run. He struck out four and walked two. He also had a pair of singles and two RBI.

Willie Palmer doubled in the victory. Josh Szerensci drove in two runs and Nate Bricker added a pair of singles.

Tyler Zelenick had Jefferson-Morgan’s lone hit, a double. He also scored the only run.

Anthony Dellapenna started and took the loss.
