Younger Rugola advances in DCP Championship

Adena Rugola scored 145 points Friday to finish first in the local qualifier of the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship held at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course.

The Uniontown freshman scored 49 points in the drive competition, tying Bridgeville’s Caroline McConnell for the top spot.

Rugola easily outdistanced the field in the chip portion, scoring 55 points, 20 points higher than the second-place finisher. She also had the top point total in putting with 41.

McConnell finished second with 115 points, with Hermitage’s McKenzie Gustas third with 102.

Uniontown’s Megan Joyce is first alternate with 91 points. Joyce scored 39 in the drive, 21 in the chip and 31 in putting.

Rugola, McConnell and Gustas now advance to the subregional at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort on Thursday, Aug. 2. The regional competition will be held at Congressional Country Club on Sunday, Sept. 9.

The national finals will be held at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday before the Masters Tournament. The competition will be broadcast live by Golf Channel.
